Planning A Party

By Kayla Garcia

INTRO

Mrs. Barker is planning a 7th grade party and wants to look at different companies to provide food and bounce houses. Which should she choose? The following includes graphs, equations, and tables in order to find which company is better.

FOOD

Burger Bonanza

Equation- Y=10X+20

Pizza Palace

Equation- Y=9.25X+61.25

Critical Thinking

  • I created each equation by plugging in the cost per person (m) and the additional fee (b) in the formula y=mx+b.

  • There will be a point where both companies cost the same. In order to calculate this, set up the equation to where both equations equal each other. Then, you can find the point of intersection by using inverse operations. The point of intersection for Burger Bonanza and Pizza Palace is (55,570).

  • If I had a budget of $1000 for food, there could be 98 people attending the blowout with food from Burger Bonanza, and 101 people attending the blowout with food from Pizza Palace. You cannot have a decimal or fraction as part of the answer, since it isn’t reasonable to have a fraction of a person as the answer.

Proposed Plan: Pizza Palace

Pizza Palace is the cheaper company, and they provide food for more people than Burger Bonanza. They cater for 101 people for just $995.50. I believe that Pizza Palace is the better company that we should choose.

Bounce House

Jumpin' Jack's

Equation- Y=54X+84

Hoppin' Around

Equation- Y=75X

Critical Thinking

  • I created each equation by plugging in the cost per hour (m) and the additional fee (b) in the formula y=mx+b.

  • There will be a point where both companies cost the same. In order to calculate this, set up the equation to where both equations equal each other. Then, you can find the point of intersection by using inverse operations. The point of intersection for Hoppin' Around and Jumpin' Jack's is (4,300).

  • If I had a budget of $750, I could rent for 12 hours at Jumpin' Jack's, and rent for 10 hours at Hoppin' Around.

Proposed Plan: Jumpin' Jack's

Jumpin' Jack's provides more bounce house time than Hoppin' Around, since 12 hours costs only $750. I believe that we should choose Jumpin' Jack's, since it is the better company.
