8th Grade ELA
In Ms. Tritico's class students continued reading the book The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Students used that story to identify and explain point of view.
Leadership in Action at the Middle School
Mrs. Kuebler's new elective, Leadership in Action has started working on two service projects. Below are some details about two projects that students in second hour are leading.
- Students are working with the Excelsior Springs Optimist Club to plan and organize the annual pop tab collection at ESMS. This activity raises funds to benefit families through the work of the Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City.
- Students are working to plan a collection for Box Tops for Education. Their goal is to collect 10,000 Box Tops this year. That will raise $1,000 for the art room to buy a pottery wheel.

ESMS Attendance Update
Through 20 days of school 88.6% of students have attended school 90% of the time. The attendance guideline established by the Missouri Department of Secondary and Elementary Education is for 90% of students to attend school 90% of the time. To meet this target, students can’t miss more than 8 days of school in each semester.
Regular school attendance is critical for your child's academic success. A recent national study examined the negative impact of student absences on immediate and long-term student achievement (Ginsburg, Jordan & Chang, 2014). Below are some of the key findings from this study.
Regular school attendance is critical for your child's academic success. A recent national study examined the negative impact of student absences on immediate and long-term student achievement (Ginsburg, Jordan & Chang, 2014). Below are some of the key findings from this study.
- Poor attendance the first month can predict chronic absence for the entire year.
- Absenteeism in middle and high school can predict dropout rates.
Absenteeism influences the likelihood of completing college in the future.
When students reduce absences, they can make academic gains.
