Week 5 Christmas Term 2015
In IPC this week we have investigated sounds and how they are made. We have learnt how sounds travel to the ear and how the ear works. Finally we created and carried out some fair tests to test our hearing. Ask your child to explain to you how to keep a test fair and what a variable is.
Next week in IPC, we will begin to explore teeth. By the end of the week we will have looked at both human and animal teeth and be able to name the different types. We are also learning what job each type of tooth does. We shall enjoy eating apples to consolidte this activity. Please send an apple to school with your child on Monday. Thank you.
Find out the purpose of canines, incisors, molars and premolars from your child. Later in the week we will learn what the inside of a tooth looks like and make model teeth too.
We will also re-cap all learning so far at the My Body workshop at the Science centre and learn so much more about how our bodies work in the Human Body Experience.
In Language Arts this week we have been focusing on inverted commas for speech (speech marks). Initially, the children were encouraged to identify speech when reading. We then investigated the rules for punctuating speech. Children completed various activities based around punctuating speech.
In our reading time, we highlighted how identifying speech helps with fluency, our CAFE strategy. The children had opportunity to try out altering the tone of their voice when they came across speech. Please encourage your child, when reading to you, to identify the features of speech marks and focus on their use of expression.
The children should be able to include speech in their personal narratives which they will write next week. Please discuss with your child experiences which they could write a narrative about, such as a sleep over, a special day etc.
In spelling we have been focusing on how to make the long u sound. We have gathered words with the split digraph u, such as tune, ue words such as glue, and ew with words such as grew. We have completed various activities around these sounds.
Next week we are focusing on the long i sound. We are really pleased with how the children are progressing with the long vowel sounds.
In maths this week we have practised addition within 1000 by bridging (regroup/rename) the ones and then the tens separately. We began using concrete materials, then moved on to using mental and written strategies (Make 10 and add on and the column method).
Next week we will continue to work on addition up to 1000 by bridging the tens and ones in one calculation (rename/regroup). We will begin by using concrete materials for understanding and progress on to the written column method.
