UPDATE: Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)
The Energy Bus for Kids by Jon Gordon
When I introduced myself to teachers and staff, I shared the powerful message of promoting and maintaining positive energy. I first learned about the impact of positive energy when reading Jon Gordon's The Energy Bus.
I'm honored to see the children's version of Gordon's book in many classrooms throughout Worcester. I'm also thankful our teachers embraced the message and have taken the initiative to share it with our students!
The children's book identifies "5 Rules for the Ride of My Life." To promote the home and school connection, I'd like to highlight one rule each week. Together, our learning community can be the one to encourage, empower, and inspire . . . And maybe, Jon Gordon can help guide us!
Rule #5: Enjoy The Ride
The fifth rule of The Energy Bus for Kids reminds us to "ENJOY THE RIDE," which is my favorite of the five rules!
As I watch my kids grow faster than I ever thought was possible, "ENJOYING THE RIDE" has become increasingly more important. Their growth has also made me more aware of my own growth (which I guess is a more positive way to describe aging)! Regardless, our time is precious and we should most definitely make the most of each moment!
During one of my first nights as principal of Worcester, I came home around 8:15 . . . feeling tired, hungry, and longing to sit in a quiet space. Before I was fully aware of how I was feeling, I ran upstairs to see if I could catch my kids before they fell asleep. The oldest and youngest were already fast asleep. Langston on the other hand was wide awake. He smiled at me and kindly asked, "Could you lay with me for a minute?" I remember thinking, "Not today . . . I'm tired, hungry, and I only signed up for a quick hug and prayer." As these thoughts occurred to me, I remembered Rule #5 and my thoughts began to change. I thought, "He loves me and wants to spend some time together . . . He's not going to want to do this for much longer . . ." With these thoughts, I decided to share about 15 minutes of my day with him, exploring his adventures and allowing his imagination to carry us away. Without a doubt, it was time well spent! And to my delight, my hunger didn't kill me and I got enough rest to do it all over again the next day!
According to Jon Gordon, "the goal of life is to live young, have fun, and arrive at your final destination as late as possible, with a smile on your face." Furthermore, we only have one ride through life so we might as well "ENJOY" it!
Ideas on How to Enjoy the Ride:
- Open your eyes, breathe deeply, and be present.
- Slow down and notice all of the wonderful things that are happening each and every day.
- Know your purpose.
- Greet other passengers with a smile.
- Share your positive energy.
- Make time for fun!
- Most importantly, choose to "ENJOY THE RIDE!"

BEE the One to . . .
Encourage, Empower, and Inspire
There any many lessons that can be learned from the honeybee. For me, the importance of community and working together for the greater good is the lesson that resonates most!
