Spotlight on LEarning
This week in 8th grade science students finished designing and creating their marble rollercoasters and applying Newton's Laws of Motion. Understanding force and motion encompasses: collecting data; calculating speed, acceleration, and distance; comparing results; and graphing the data accurately.
Sixth and seventh grade students through their science classes provided feedback and voted on best coaster with criteria such as design, creativity, etc. During one class three architects from Huckabee Architects made a surprise visit to the class presenting and asked good specific questions. One student seized the opportunity to share their desire to be an architect one day as well. We are proud of our students being confident enough to share their ideas with adults in their potential career paths.
The architects were impressed with not only our 8th grade student's presentations, but also with the energy and collaborative learning occurring in all around the school. They left knowing that learning happens any place, any time at Prestwick STEM Academy!
Staff Spotlight- Mrs. April Styer
Greeting Lobos! This weeks staff spotlight is 8th grade Algebra teacher, Mrs. April Styer. Mrs. Styer is the proudest member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggies class of 2008. WHOOP! Mrs. Styer graduated with a Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies and also possess a Master’s in Education Administration. In addition, Mrs. Styer is pursuing her second Masters in Curriculum and Instruction at Texas Women’s University.
This is Mrs. Styer's 9th year teaching and 4th year with LEISD. Mrs. Styer loves teaching math, specifically Algebra, because it allows her the opportunity to apply knowledge to real-world experiences. Mrs. Styer’s goals are to build her student’s confidence with math and have students feel the same passion about math that she does. “I love the excitement that my students have when they solve a problem that they thought they couldn’t solve.”
