Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Our longtime friend and evening custodian Geno Mancinas retired on Friday, January 22nd. Geno has worked at Shaw since 2001. Geno was always quick with a smile, a witty comeback and a helping hand. He will be missed greatly by our community!
Geno enjoys gardening. He has a flock of chicken’s and a little orchard of fruit tree’s. For his retirement (instead of the gold watch) we gifted him a fig tree---who says money doesn’t grow on tree’s!
Adios Geno, thank you for all of the work you have done on our behalf! We will miss you and send you wishes of great fun and adventure in retirement.
Fondly,
Principal Engdall and community

Message From Laura Hildwein
The Positive Power of Self-Talk
Positive self-talk can help to build confidence, improve attitude, encourage motivation, help people cope with stress and allow us to work through challenges.
Many people (both children and adults) do not have all the tools they need to regulate their emotions. Positive self-talk is one tool people can add to their toolbox to deal with the challenges they face.
Here are some examples of positive self-talk “I can do this”, “I got this”, “I am strong”, “I am smart”, “I can figure this out”. These comments are usually said quietly to ourselves and can help us to move forward.
It is easy to make negative comments about ourselves and, to let the doubt in our abilities creep in. How do you respond if you hear someone making negative statements about themselves, or, you catch yourself making these comments? Statements like “I am stupid”, “Nobody likes me” and “I can’t do anything right”. If we hear these statements from ourselves or our loved ones we know that we are falling into the trap of negativity. Our immediate thought is to deny what is being said. Instead of arguing with negative self-talk ask why they/we feel that way. Listen and empathize. Get talking and validate feelings. This can help pinpoint a problem so that possible solutions can be generated.
Practice using positive self-talk when things are going well, so that it comes more naturally when challenges arise.
You got this!!

Open Enrollment Applications
Last week, the Phoenix Elementary School District mailed open enrollment forms to every Shaw household. These forms are required every year - one for every student, to continue enrollment at our school.
They are time and date stamped when they are received, so if it isn’t on your priority list to submit yet- it should be!
Covid precautions in place, we are asking that you scan and submit your open enrollment forms by email to Christina.Girard@Phxschoools.org . However, if you cannot submit electronically, you can mail the form back to us, or drop it off in person. If you drop off in person, we are asking out of courtesy to office staff to reduce exposure to please utilize the black metal drop box to the right of the office door (looks like a standing mailbox) and not to ring the doorbell or hand the form off in person. These forms are due NO LATER THAN MARCH 1st, 2021. Thank you! (Letters and forms are provided here for anyone who did not receive one, or needs an additional form.)
Sibling Enrollment:
If you have a child that is 3 or turning 3 prior to August 12, 2021 and you would like to enroll them into our Primary program, please fill out the attached sibling application and submit to Christina.Girard@Phxschools.org no later than March 15, 2021. Thank you!

Student Work Packet Pick Up
Our teachers periodically have sent messages to parents to pick up student work outside of the office. If you are a parent looking to pick up something other than a laptop, all work should be outside organized by teacher for pick up. Office staff does not have any information about the student work outside. We are finding that parents will ring the bell to ask about student work outside. Please relay any questions about these packets directly to the teacher. If you are unable to locate your students packet, please direct your question to the teacher. Thank you!
