Coloma Junior High

Week of September 6th, 2021

Strong Start!

We had a great first week at the JH. Students are getting acclimated, finding their classes and getting the locker combinations down. Classes are learning new routines and getting to know each other.

As we enter the 2nd week, we will have the added mandate of masks. Students and staff will be wearing masks while in the building. We will incorporate an opportunity for a mask break when we are able to go outside during lunches. You can see Superintendent Ehlers message below. All of our routines in the building will stay the same at this time.

In classes you will start to see the start of homework and daily assignments. Now is the perfect time to set a routine with your child to check PowerSchool regularly. In PowerSchool you can see your child's grades for each class as well as the individual assignments for every class. We highly recommend checking your child's grades at least once per week. PowerSchool log in information was sent home during Open House or with your child the first day of school. Please contact the main office if you are having difficulty.

Tank the Therapy Pup

Tank had a great first week at school! His first day he was so excited he was barking in the hallway. Tank has been getting to know students at recess and in the hallways, he has lots to learn. Tank's favorite activity this week has been napping under Ms. Wyatt's desk.

What is Second Step During RTI?

Did your child come home last week and tell you about Second Step during their RTI period?

We want your child to be successful in school, and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, students also need skills for learning challenges, making good decisions, handling strong emotions and getting along with others.

Last week during RTI, we began a new initiative that is Second Step for Middle School. This is a research based social-emotional learning program that aligns with K-5. The program is designed to improve students' social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school.

These include:

  • Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
  • Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment.
  • Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress.
  • Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.

If you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please don't hesitate to contact me for further information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.

This Week in Second Step Lessons

Every week when we conduct a new lesson, we will let families know what is covered so that you can continue to support the initiative from home.

Topics this Week

This week your child was introduced to the Second Step program and the classroom had a discussion about starting Middle School, identifying challenges they may face and about helping new students.

Continuing the Conversation at Home

You can continue the discussion by talking about what made you nervous when you were in Junior High and who they can go to for help. You can also talk about helping students that are new to the community and provide examples of times that you have been helpful to others, or how you have wished others could have been helpful when you were in a new situation.
