Lowell Media Minute
by Mrs. Van Scoy (Mrs. "V.")
Greetings from the Media Center!
It has been a fast-paced, exciting September getting to know 414 students and their reading interests. We focused on the following in the library and computer lab during the month of September:
- Kindergarten/1st grade classes learned/re-learned how to check out and care for borrowed books and how to log onto a school computer using their unique username (student ID/lunch #) and password.
- Second through fifth grade classes reviewed library organization (fiction vs. nonfiction), computer lab procedures, and Lowell website navigation. Fourth and fifth grade practiced sorting and shelving books on virtual library shelves.
If you want to surprise your children, tell them you heard about the "gnomes of knowledge" on Mrs. V's desk. The gnomes are my low-tech version of Amazon's Alexa. Unfortunately, they do not know where every book is located in the library yet!
In October, all grades will be learning about internet safety and practicing good digital citizenship. An excellent parental/guardian resource for evaluating media and using media safely can be found at https://www.commonsensemedia.org/
I am looking forward to a great year working with your students as their new media specialist.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Van Scoy
