Professional Development Goals 2014-2015
Professional Development Essential Question: How can we transform learning that can occur as a result of technology integration and attention to SAMR?
GOALS:
- To review "quick wins" as a follow up from the Apple trainings in order to teach what good looks like in the classroom and have a common ground for talking about the integration of iWorks and iLife
- To collaborate online and through video with other Vanguards across the country monthly by using the video platform of 'Go To Meeting' and SMORE to support the teachers in your schools with the integration of the iPads and technology
- To train Vanguard teacher leaders to turn around and train teachers on the best instructional practices using their iPads in order to produce, reflect and share by showcasing student work and best practices through the “cloud” across the schools and classrooms
- To communicate and collaborate with your instructional team and teachers an understanding of "what good looks like" as we add rigor and move through the SAMR continuum.
By the end of the session you will be able to:
- Continue to implement the professional development goals for the school year 2014-15 with at your school with your teachers and staff
- Understand and begin to apply more learning opportunities in the classroom with the iPad based on the essential question: How can we transform learning that can occur as a result of technology integration and attention to SAMR?
- Read and reflect using the article to "Ten Current and Future Edtech Trends".
- Use the model of adding rigor to AMPLIFY a lesson while increasing rigor and moving up the SAMR continuum.

Reflections and Next Steps
SAMR: Let's Review
SAMR, a model designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning, was developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura. The model aims to enable teachers to design, develop, and integrate digital learning experiences that utilize technology to transform learning experiences to lead to high levels of achievement for students.Where are you on the SAMR continuum?
DEFINING RIGOR
There are two questions to keep in mind in terms of both content and processes that students need/want to learn:
- Will this use of technology do something that they COULDN'T do before?
- Will this use of technology do something that they COULD do before, but better?
(Blackburn, 2008)
Moving up the SAMR Continuum
Information Collection and Analysis - Are these equivalent to SAMR-Modification?
- information exchanges: Sharing information that is intrinsically interesting to students nationally (across schools).
- database creation: Collecting and organizing information into databases that project participants and others can use for study and analysis. (NUMBERS app)
- electronic publishing: Creation of electronic periodicals, report repositories, and online galleries which appeal to an international audience.
- telefieldtrips: Rich, multidisciplinary and multimedia virtual experiences where students either take a local fieldtrip and share their experiences online, or electronically follow adults who are researching scientific relationships or historical sites.
- 21st century competencies: Learners communicate, share and reflect on various lessons and projects.
Problem Solving - Are these equivalent to SAMR-Redefinition?
- information searches: Students are given clues and must use either online or more traditional resources to answer questions; usually structured as competitions.
- peer feedback activities: Participants offer constructive responses to others' ideas and their expression.
- parallel problem solving: Problems are presented to and explored by students in several locations before they come together online to compare, contrast, and discuss their separate problem-solving methods.
- sequential problem solving: Students interact by collaboratively creating a common work.
- telepresent problem solving: Participants from different geographic locations and time zones participate either asynchronously or in real time in a virtual meeting.
- simulations: Students experience a high depth of learning and task engagement by participating in simulated contexts.

Can you add rigor to the above Keynote? Can you add rigor to your own Keynote? Use the ideas that were modeled in this PD. We will have a check in for the new year.
WIKIPEDIA FOR SCHOOLS http://schools-wikipedia.org/
Welcome to Wikipedia for Schools! http://schools-wikipedia.org/
This selection of articles from Wikipedia matches the UK National Curriculum and can be used by school children around the world. 6000 articles, 26 million words and 50,000 images make Wikipedia for Schools bigger than Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia put together!
Wikipedia is great, but it wasn’t designed with the National Curriculum in mind. And because anyone can edit it, articles sometimes get vandalised. That’s why we’ve put together this special collection to make learning as easy and safe as it can be. Here at SOS Children, we’ve checked all the articles, tidied them up a bit, and put them together by school subject.
SOS Children ( www.soschildrensvillages.org.uk) is a charity which works around the world to help children in need. As well as Wikipedia articles, we’ve collected pages from the SOS Children website, so you can learn more about the work we do in 125 countries around the world.

Toby's Tech Tip
The Clock – Tick Tock
- How do you get quick access to the clock features? Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to open Control Center, and then tap the Clock icon. You can access alarms in the Control Center even when the iPad is locked.
- Do you want the iPad to wake you? Tap Alarm, then tap +. Set your wake-up time and other options, and then give the alarm a name (like "teacher meeting”).
- Do you want to keep track of time? Use the stopwatch to keep time, record lap times, or set a timer to alert you when time's up. If you're boiling an egg, just tell Siri to "set the timer for 3 minutes”.
- Do you want to fall asleep to music or a podcast? Tap Timer, then tap When Timer Ends and choose Stop Playing at the bottom

Tobytech's Three-Free App Recommendations
This Day in History for iPad is an interactive multimedia calendar that displays historical events for the current day or any selected day, along with related media such as photos, illustrations, music, and speeches. You can hear the national anthems of countries on the day they became a nation, listen to presidents’ speeches on the anniversaries of their inaugurations, and play sound clips from famous artists on their birthdays.
Background text that appears for each event concentrates on interesting aspects that you might not know. For example, did you know that Vermont was an independent republic for 14 years before becoming a state and that George Washington at one point considered sending troops to overthrow the Vermont government? Each event also has at least one picture for every event, so you can experience the people and places making each day in history famous. The journey begins here, each and every day.
QUIZLET
Quizlet’s free study tools and apps are used by over a million students and teachers a day in every country – from grade school to grad school, language learners to vocational students, at home and in the classroom.
SUBTEXT
Subtext is an iOS app that brings reading to the digital world where today's students live, play, and learn. When educators embed questions, discussion prompts, polls, videos, and web links in digital text, students begin to read closely and with purpose. Teachers call Subtext a "game-changer" for its ability to promote collaborative 21st Century learning while teaching students the skills they'll need to be successful in college and careers.
NEXT STEPS FOR VANGUARDS: FOCUS OF THE MONTH: KEYNOTE
- During the month of December, share and teach this information to your teachers. Have a plan with your instructional team. The monthly SMORES do not represent changes to our work or content, but instead represent more in-depth information.
- As you put evidence on the Shutterfly SHARE, please reflect and note the following: What is the lesson (give background)? Where is it on the SAMR continuum? How can you or could you add more rigor? What are some reflections you had after analyzing student work? How can this help your peers?
- Give your teachers challenges and ideas to do like we did in the PD. I am looking forward to volunteers who are willing to share their results of the Tobytech Challenges!!!
- Work with your Principals and as part of your school’s instructional team as you use these resources to drive rigor and student engagement at your locations.
- Use Toby as your "go to" Education Manager for Technology. If I don't know the answer, I will direct you appropriately. Use Face Time as much as you can. My cell is 215-680-0123 and you can Face Time me on my NLCI email.
