Lent Activities
Lenten Activities – February/April 2019
1. Burning of Palms – Tuesday, February 25, 2020
- All students will gather at the back of school and stand in a circle around a big bucket of palms after Morning Prayer/Pledge.
- Deacon Sponder/Deacon Richard will lead the service and the Maintenance Crew will do the burning of palms.
2. Ash Wednesday Mass: Wednesday, February 26, 2020
- The Choir will sing at mass (Organist: Mrs. Janet Reif)
- Students will practice the Lenten songs during Music Class and during Mrs. Reif’s time with the Choir.
- Our Students will take the readings, altar serving and the gifts – 8th Grade & 4th Grade Preparing. This is our end of the month mass and I would suggest that we skip the Rosary as this mass is a Parish Mass and is going to take longer because of the distribution of Ashes.
3. Lenten Resolutions Paper Chains – 1st Week of Lent – Due on Monday, March 2, 2020
- Purple strips will be given to each class for students to write their Lenten Resolutions on one side and their names on the other. Each class will attach/staple the completed strips in a chain and bring it to Morning Prayer in the Gym on Monday, March 2, 2019; where all paper chains will be joined together one class at a time. The completed paper chain will be draped over a cross and placed in the main lobby of the school building.
4. Stations of the Cross Posters at each Classroom Door: 2nd Week of Lent – To be displayed on Monday, March 9, 2020.
A set of the Stations of the Cross was enlarged last year to create posters. Each class will be assigned a Station and will posters will be displayed outside each classroom door all through Lent. Church Buddies could get together and work on a Lenten activity; such as having a prayer service, a visit to church for quiet prayer time or go to the Ministry Center Chapel for Adoration etc…
5. Almsgiving – We will work on the same Lenten Almsgiving Project as the parish; the Rice Bowl Project. Linda Hawkins has asked Sr. Christine to bring the Rice Bowls from the rectory and our students will each get one to fill with money….pennies etc… This money is used to buy rice to feed the hungry of our world through the Catholic Relief Services. A representative of the CRS asked to come and talk to our students about the Rice Bowl Activity.
6. Penance Service/Confessions:
- Confessions will take place after mass during Lent following this process:
- The whole school will go to confession on the same day. (More information will be shared about this).
- 8th Grade will seek Reconciliation opportunities on their own as part of their Confirmation requirement.
7. Stations of the Cross:
a) The Living Stations of the Cross – (Grades 7th and 8th) scheduled for Friday, April 3 at 2:00PM and 7:00PM in church.
b) Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent: (Feb.28, March 6, 13, 20, 27 and April 3 at 2:15PM)
This is a schoolwide prayer service for grades 2 – 8 done in church! Below is a class sign-up sheet for leading the Stations on Fridays during Lent:

The Assigned Class for Leading the Stations is responsible for:
1. Coming up with a “Stations of the Cross” Script
2. Assigning students, practicing and preparing them for this role.
3. Preparing 3 students to carry the cross and the two candles, moving from one station to the other during the service.
Getting the entire class involved in some kind of way, singing, acting out some parts etc…Proficiency Scales
**We will be using these next year! Good to get yourself familiar with them now!
Walk throughs are almost done!
I will be conducting walk through observations. This will be the last time before your FORMAL observation
****I want to schedule a PRE OBSERVATION with teachers that I will be conducting a formal observation for***
Just a timeline for future observations, the third (and final) walk through is due by March 27th. After that I will begin formal observations. This will definitely need more work on your end and will require scheduling a full class from beginning to end. Typically about 40-45 minutes. We will talk more about this in 2020.
iReady goal is 75% of students are using iReady for at least 30 minutes each week
