JHHS Celebrates Virginia Kindness Week - Take the Kindness Challenge
While Kindness Week can’t solve all the problems we are facing, it can assist us as we rebuild relationships, foster connections in our communities, promote optimism, and restore hope. If we look beyond its simplistic appearance, Kindness Week truly has the potential to do so much for so many.
So, take the Kindness Challenge - nominate a student or staff member as a Virginia Ambassador of Kindness!
Why Kindness?
Research has proven that kindness helps us to form meaningful connections with others, which are reported to be a strong factor in increasing happiness.
Kindness has been proven to boost serotonin, reduce stress, increase positive affect, release endorphins and the hormone oxytocin in numerous scientific studies.
Teaching and recognizing kindness in schools and communities fosters empathy, builds community, reduces bullying and nurtures a safe and welcoming environment (Currie, 2015).
By promoting kindness, we are promoting inclusivity by extending an opportunity for grace, empathy, dignity and acceptance across Virginia (Layous , Nelson,Oberle, Schonert-Reichl, Lyubomirsky, 2012).

Therapeutic Journaling: Writing to Reflect and Process Personal Experiences
Sponsored by: Handley’s Miscellanea Club
Instructor: Star Friend
JHHS English teacher
Teacher consultant, The Shenandoah Valley Writing Project
In this five-week workshop, participants will learn techniques for writing to process experiences, promote personal growth, and develop creativity. Workshop activities will be based on concepts developed by writers, artists, and life coaches to understand and derive meaning from our own lives.
All workshops will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays via Google Meet. Use the nickname “friends” to join. The workshops are open to students, teachers, and parents, and are entirely voluntary and optional. You do not need to attend all sessions to participate. Those who do attend will have the option to share their writing, but there is no pressure to do so.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, Feb. 9 - Writing about past and present life events; developing a memoir.
Tuesday, Feb. 16 - Morning Pages - Establish a daily writing habit to inspire creativity (based on The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron).
Tuesday, Feb. 23 - Creative journaling - writing, drawing, and coloring to remember experiences (for teens and adults), incorporating concepts from artist Lynda Barry, author of “What It Is” and “Syllabus.”
Tuesday, March 2 - Art therapy - Practice simple art and writing exercises to promote inner peace and manage anxiety.
Tuesday, March 9 - Final session - Participants may discuss progress on creative projects or memoir pieces, share or read aloud.
*Students who want to attend the workshop sessions should have a parent or guardian fill out this permission form.

Procedure for Requesting Change from Hybrid to Distance Learning Schedule
Here is the procedure to follow if you would like to make a request to change from Hybrid to Distance Learning. Until the student is approved for a change to DL, they must continue to attend school or they will be marked absent.
- The parents/guardians must contact their student's school counselor to ask for a change request.
- School counselor submits a Google form request for the student.
- Principal Kablan checks the spreadsheet and approves/denies the request.
- Once approved, the counselor contacts the parent/guardian to let them know that it has been approved for the student to move to DL.
- Then, the registrar changes the information for the student in PowerSchool. She sends out weekly updates to teachers.
Free Meals Available on Wednesdays!
During the 2020-2021 school year, free meals for all students will be available for pickup at each school on Wednesdays from 11 am until 1 pm. Students do not need to be present for meal pick up and no documentation is required.
Students will receive one breakfast and one lunch for each day they are not physically in school.
- Hybrid schedule students will receive 3 breakfasts and 3 lunches.
- 100% Distance Learning students will receive 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches.
You can pick up meals for all your children at one single school.
Please fill this form. This will help us with planning our food orders and labor requirements. Thank you for your help!
