And the Winner Is...
Brooke (pictured above) was announced as the winner of the January 2014 newsletter contest. She correctly answered the question: "What was the most circulated book in the MV JR/SR HS library during the calendar year 2013?" Her name was drawn from among the fourteen other students who also guessed the correct answer, Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. Brooke received a Subway gift card donated by Mrs. Niland. Each monthly issue of MV Library Illuminations will offer a contest to encourage students and staff to check out the monthly newsletter. Twenty-six students participated in the January contest.
Biology Classes Use Periodicals
Ms. Cochran's biology classes will use the library's periodicals collection to keep up with science news throughout the spring semester. Each week, students will complete a summary of an article (written in cursive) from a print or online periodical. Popular library sources are Sports Illustrated, Popular Science, Health, Discover and Time. Below Ms. Cochran uses an example to explain the assignment requirements to first hour Biology students.
War of the Worlds Download
Science fiction fans and those in search of a little extra credit in English swarmed the library January 22nd at 3:00 for the mass download of the ebook, War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. Mr. Stucky provided the instructions for the free ChromeBook download. Students feasted on alien snacks and beverages. The Book Club members will have until March 5th to read it and attend the discussion that day.
Junior High Book Club Reads The Cay by Theodore Taylor
Massive Junior High Book Check Out
Students lined up at the library door on February 22nd waiting for the distribution of the latest in the book club offerings, The Cay by Theodore Taylor. The story is about the struggle to survive when the S.S. Hato was torpedoed two days after leaving Panama in 1942. All 29 available copies were spoken for by 9:00 am that day. With only 137 pages, students can finish the novel in a short amount of time and return the book for others to read. This survival story will be discussed during seminar on March 6th. For a glimpse of the plot, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98nlRp_IC2M . Above: Students shown waiting for books are Marlow, Ethan, Adam, Cameron, Caleb, Emily and Brogan.
