Wildcat Wire
January 13, 2023
From The School Counselor!
We are back and have made it through the first full week of school - yay! We're also halfway through January and have already experienced a blizzard, below zero temps, and days in the 40s. Around this time of year, some people may start to experience "the winter blues." Although it sounds like just a change in mood and something people joke about, here is actual scientific evidence that proves there is a real diagnosis that could go along with it! According to NHinform, "seasonal affective disorder" is the scientific name for the winter blues, and scientists believe the main cause is due to shorter daylight hours during the winter (and lack of sunlight). People also produce higher levels of melatonin (a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness) which can cause more tiredness and symptoms of depression.
So, how can we combat these winter blues?
I've attached a few activities you can try at home with your families to help fight the winter blues! Additionally, keep in mind that there are many resources available throughout the school and community, as well. Last week's Wildcat Wire introduced our newest Wildcat, Abby Boyd. Abby is our new Behavioral Interventionist and has been a great addition to our team. Additionally, Angie Raddatz, a school social worker from Keystone AEA is here two days a week to provide services. Together, the three of us are determined to serve our students and families within our school district in any way possible!
