Valentine's Day Fun Fact - Did you know?
The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1868. Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year. That's 58 million pounds of just chocolate!
Equity:
Words matter. Every day in schools, language is used—implying, intentionally or not—that some subset of students have little potential. As a result, countless students “underachieve,” others become disengaged, and, ultimately, we all lose.
Mica Pollock writes about what it takes for those working in schools to match their speech to their values, giving all students an equal opportunity to thrive, by juxtaposing common scenarios with useful exercises and resources.
Schooltalk will empower all educators, revealing to them an incredibly effective tool at their disposal to support the success of all students every day: their words.
Health and Wellness:
In today's environment toxic stress impacts students, educators, and parents. Roughly half a million U.S. teachers leave the profession each year - over a 20% turnover rate. The following article provides an overview of toxic stress and using mindfulness as one practice to mitigate the effects of toxic stress.

Leadership:
Continuous improvement is a necessity in education. In the New York Times Bestseller, Atomic Habits by James Clear, you’ll develop a plan that can take you to new heights. Check out this video that gives you a taste of Clear’s ideas on habits that lead to remarkable results.
Literacy:
The state initiative to improve literacy outcomes for our students through implementing the Essential Practices in Early and Elementary Literacy continues to be a top priority. In order to support this important work in literacy, please check out this great resource:
Check out the Literacy Essentials Online Modules for a great professional learning opportunity (with SCECHs!) that you can do with your grade level team, staff, or in your pj's from home! These modules are intended to be completed collaboratively, as the conversations are what make the learning rich.
Math:
“The introduction of Number Talks is a pivotal vehicle for developing efficient, flexible, and accurate computation strategies that build upon the key foundational ideas of mathematics.” Sherry Parrish.

School Counselor Professional Development Law:
Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1233 was recently amended requiring school counselors to complete fifty (50) professional development hours specific to college and career readiness every five years. These hours are a part of the required 150 hours of Education-Related Professional Learning hours necessary for renewal of a Michigan teaching certificate with a School Counselor (NT) endorsement and the School Counselor License. The hours must be accrued as follows:
- 25 hours - college preparation and selection; and
- 25 hours - career consultation; and
- 5 hours of the 50 hours MUST include the exploration of military career options as it pertains to career opportunities
These 50 hours can only be accrued through traditional SCECH's. Non-traditional SCECH's and DPPD can only be used for the 100 general hours.

Message from Ryan Berdiner
Lieutenant Colonel, Field Artillery
Educators, Counselors and Community Partners,
As you know, the U.S. Army is hosting the Army Careers & Education Symposium (ACES) in a few weeks and we appreciate you signing up for this outstanding event. This 5 hour training will meet the requirement for Michigan's new education bill that directs high school guidance counselors to receive 5 hours of military training. The intent of this training is to educate our administrators, counselors, educators, and community partners about the benefits, training, jobs and lifestyle the Army offers. This event will also include interactive military displays and the opportunity to see and use military technology and equipment. I am also proud to announce that Medal of Honor Recipient, Mr. James McCloughan, will address the audience. Mr. McCloughan was recently awarded our military's highest honor and is a retired teacher and Hall of Fame high school coach from the great state of Michigan.
We also hope to break down stereotypes about the Army and demonstrate how the Army is an organization that values training and continuing education. We will show that the Army offers training and jobs that translate very well to the civilian sector - with competitive pay and outstanding benefits. The Army is much more and we have over 150 career fields that include: cyber/computer science, veterinarian and medical services, police, engineering, and intelligence. Additionally, continuing education credits (5 hours) will be provided for this free training. We look forward to seeing you at Macomb Community College on February 22nd. I have attached a map of the symposium location on campus.
