A Message from Mrs. Caudill
I would like to take a moment to thank our families for making sure our students are logging into their Zoom sessions. Our participation rate and attendance has been fantastic. As we finish our first month of official distance learning, I think it is important to have a few Zoom reminders - reminders for both parents and students.
I appreciate you finding a quiet place for you student to Zoom with their class. It really helps them focus on the learning and enables them to interact more with their classmates and teacher. We have a limited amount of face-to-face time and we want to make the most of it. Also as please remember, if you a have conversation in the background during Zoom and your child's mic is not on mute, we can hear everything.
Students are really doing a great job putting their "school" hat on when they sit down to Zoom with their class. For the most part they are focused and ready. However, we are starting to see a few distractions as time passes such as food and toys during Zoom. Before this becomes an issue, we would love your help in encouraging students to set these aside during class Zoom meetings. If you haven't seen it, second grade teacher, Mrs. Willerer and her daughter, Ms. Willerer, kindergarten teacher at Winchester, made a great video to share with your student about Zoom expectations. Your partnership during this process has been invaluable. Thank you for everything you are doing to ensure teaching and learning can continue even though we are not all under one roof.
Happy Mother's Day to all of our Amerman Moms!

The survey should take you approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please try to respond to all items. Thank you!

TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH READING COMPREHENSION
Recently we shared some reading tips for families geared toward K-2 readers. This week, we are sharing resources for older readers.
There comes a time in a reader’s life when they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. While these readers are very independent and capable of reading the words in the text, they still need guidance to make connections, search for deeper meaning and make sense of what they read. Comprehension conversations give us evidence of what a reader is thinking and understanding about what they have read. Think about yourself as a reader, as adults we do not go around making book reports about what we have read. We talk about what we read, make connections, make recommendations to others and we share with others. Here are a few tips about how to support your readers and ways for keeping conversations going at home
5 Ways to Support Your Reader
(While I know it talks about MIddle Grade Readers, these tips great for any reader who is growing as a reader who reads to learn.)
Comprehension Bookmark
Use the questions on these bookmarks to spark those meaningful conversations about what your child is reading. When your child has become an independent reader and does not read aloud to you anymore you could use these questions to find out what he/she has read, is learning about and help him/her make connections and find deeper meaning.

Dragon Rider, by Cornelia Funke
This week Mrs. Caudill started reading a new book. The book is Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. Ms. Funke has written several books our upper elementary students may be familiar with including Inkheart and The Thief Lord. The book appeals to all ages, from early elementary to adult. It is a story about friendship, adventure and the true meaning of home.
The story is about Firedrake, Ben and their furry friend, Sorrel, who are in search of the mythical place where dragons can live in peace forever. Together, they embark on a journey that takes them to magical lands where they meet marvelous creatures - and one ruthless villain. Along the way, they discover allies in odd places, courage they didn't know they had, and a hidden destiny that changes everything.
This book a quite a bit longer than the last read aloud. As a result, the recorded readings are longer as well.

May's Focus: Integrity! Habit 8: Find your Voice!
Every month Amerman Focuses on a new theme and Leader in Me Habit of the Month. The focus for the month of April is Integrity and our Habit of the Month is Habit 8: Find Your Voice. Just because we are not at school doesn't mean we can't practice our Leader in Me Habits and our theme of the month.
Find your voice means finding something that you are good at and like doing. You are proud, but do not boast. Instead, you use your expertise to help and inspire others.
