Banks Trail Middle School

Teamwork, Responsibility, Ambition, Integrity, Leadership

July 2018

Dear Timberwolf Families,

It is with great excitement that I welcome students, parents and teachers back to another school year. I would especially like to welcome our new 6th grade class as they begin their middle school experience. I am confident this school year will be filled with exciting adventures to help our students grow socially, emotionally and academically. As they experience new opportunities and challenges, the Banks Trail school community will be there to support them by providing a caring and nurturing environment.

While the summer days have been flying by, Banks Trail has been a very active place. Our custodial staff has been working diligently to insure our building is ready and inviting for August 20. Our technology team has replaced and updated our classroom Smartboards and Chromebooks; the Maintenance department has been assisting with installing new carpet throughout the building and making sure all needed repairs are completed; and our office staff has been working hard to make sure you have all the necessary information for the start of school.

Although it is summer, BTMS has been filled with students almost every week. They have been involved in a variety of athletic camps, performance camps and today our new 6th graders are wrapping up the Path to The Trail program. Our dedicated teachers have been stopping by to discuss new programs, creative ideas, and talking about workshops and conferences they attended over the summer to help prepare our students for their future. Many have come in to check out their rooms and began setting up to insure that our students know just how welcomed they are when they return to school.

This school year, we are proud to announce BTMS is a technology pilot school! We will be moving to a 1:1 Chromebook initiative as the school year progresses. Your students will have access and use technology to learn and grow each, and every day in all their classrooms.

I know it is hard to believe, but with the growth we have had, we also have grown our Banks Trail Family of Teachers. We would like to welcome the following new teachers to BTMS:

Alrene Sunderlage – 6th grade Social Studies

Laura Parker – 6th grade Math

Victoria Tyler – 6th grade Math and Science

Mary Beth Moss – 6th grade ELA and Social Studies

Brent Wilson- 7th grade Science

Robin Hightower – 7th grade Math

Shannon Gross – 7th grade ELA and Social Studies

Cam Norwood – 8th grade Science and Social Studies

Maura Hayes – Special Education

Elizabeth Parra – Family and Consumer Science

Aron Smart – Drama

Titus Quinn- Drama

Gene Simpson – Physical Education

Sara Davis – Media Specialist

Precious Daugherty – 7th grade Guidance Counselor

Melissa Covington – Mental Health Counselor

Sara Castillo-Thompson – Behavior Interventionist

As I enter my fourth year at BTMS, I am just as excited as I was on day one. In my inaugural year, we developed the “TRAIL” Mission statement (Teamwork, Responsibility, Ambition, Integrity and Leadership) and each year our students and staff have grown stronger in their commitment to the TRAIL. I love coming to work every day and being able to build relationships with our students, staff, and families and experience the success of our students in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in their artistic performances.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us.

Meet the Teacher will be held on August 15 for all students. At BTMS we all try to grow and learn from our experiences. Class Schedules

We try to be good stewards of our money so this year Banks Trail will continue something we started two years ago with student class schedules. Class schedules will be able to be picked up on Friday, August 10, from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM. Schedules will also be available the evening of August 10th on parent portal. We can only distribute schedules to the parent or the student who is attending BTMS. If you are having trouble logging in to Parent Portal, you may contact Tanya Hudson, She will be available starting July 30.

Every student at BTMS takes part in the summer reading program. Students will need to select two books from the SC Junior Book Award Nominees (2017-18) and read them over the summer. Students will then complete an online test by Monday, August 27 on each book.

Here is the list of the SC Junior Book Award nominees: Summer Reading 2018.pdf

To all UPCOMING seventh grade parents:

As of August 2013, ALL seventh graders are REQUIRED to get the Tdap vaccine to protect them against whooping cough. Students who have not received the Tdap vaccination may not be allowed to attend school for the upcoming school year.

Please check with your family’s physician and /or contact the local health department for more information regarding this vaccine. Remember, beat the rush and do not wait until the last minute to check on the status of your child immunizations.

If you have not submitted a current SC immunization certificate to the school, and believe your student has received the Tdap booster, please do so as soon as possible.

You will have thirty days from the first day of school to have your student in compliance or they will not be able to attend school.

If you have any questions, please call Robin Brown, BTMS school nurse at 803-578-2994.

School Communication

In an effort to keep all of our Timberwolf families informed, we will use a variety of communication channels. First and foremost, our BTMS website, is an excellent source of information, and Mrs. Cost does a great job keeping it updated. We also have a Twitter account at BTMS: @btmstimberwolf where we try to post announcements and recognize Timberwolves using this instant technology. Each week parents can expect to receive an electronic copy of a weekly update from your child’s teachers. This will help you know what is going on with their classes. Our 2018-19 Student handbook has been added to the BTMS web site. Please pay special attention to the Cell Phone/Electronic Device, Absence/Tardy, and Dress Code policies.

If you are not already involved in the BTMS PTO, we hope you will. Our PTO is the best around and they do a wonderful job for the students and teachers at our school. Here is the list of this years officers:
