Small Group Helpful Hints
Groups are homogenous, yet fluid analogous to Guided Reading (Fountas & Pinnell, 2001) Small Groups can be formed around a shared need. Groups do not have to be part of a station rotation, but can be called from where they are working. (Wedekind, 2011) These could be based around informal assessment of mini lesson. (Sienna, 2009) Teachers assess students and group them according to their proficiency level. Small group lessons are an opportunity to closely observe student work and provide strong support for struggling students (Sammons, 2010) Heterogeneous groups can also be used dependending on the activity or lesson being delivered at the small group table.
Small Group Lesson Options (Sammons, 2010)

- As you are looking at your data and your students needs during your small group reading instruction I am attaching the Guided Reading Lesson Plan and the Strategy Group Lesson Document. Please let me know how I can support you with this.
- As you are planning your Lessons from Lucy Calkins you will notice the use of various mentor texts cited in these lessons. Many of these texts have been included in her trade pack. As always, the mentor texts cited are only a suggestion and should be previewed prior to using with students. You have the option to choose another book that meets the learning outcome identified by unpacking the standards. If you feel like there is a more appropriate book to use as a mentor text please feel free to use one that best supports the needs of your students.
