LOCAL SCHOOL COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED

Dear Big Creek Parents,

As we plan for the 2019-2020 school year, we have an important position to fill on our Local School Council (LSC). The LSC is designed to bring parents and the community together with teachers and school administrators to foster mutual respect for each other’s concerns and share ideas for school improvement. We are currently seeking nominations for one LSC Parent Representative. The LSC at Big Creek meets four times a year. Elected members serve a two-year term and may run for re-election once, thus serving a maximum of four years on the council.

According to the bylaws, the Parent Representative shall be elected by, and from among, the group they represent. Employees in the school who are also parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school are excluded from serving as parent representatives.

If you are interested in running for the Big Creek Local School Council, please email me at lwebb@forsyth.k12.ga.us by May 3. Elections will be held electronically during the month of May.

Your principal,
Laura Webb

Notes from Nurse G

MEDICATIONS: If you have medication for your child in the clinic, it must be picked up, by you, before 1:30 pm on May 24, the last day of school. Any and all medicine not picked up by a parent/guardian will be destroyed per FDA regulations. If for some reason, you are unable to pick up on the last day of school, please let me know, at least a week in advance so we can make other arrangements. I understand many classes still have field trips planned for the beginning and middle of May. If your student’s class is one of those, please wait until after the field trip to pick up any medications. This will ensure that your student’s medications will be with them on the field trip. Medications may be picked up during school hours, and the best time is 7:10 am – 8:00 am, when the clinic is the least busy. Please understand if I am with a student at the time of your arrival you will be asked to wait until I complete that student's care. Thank you for your understanding.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Medical condition care plans are only good for the school year. These are available on the Big Creek Web site under the Student Services tab, then click on School Nurse. When my page opens, click on forms. You may send these electronically to your child’s physician or print them and drop them off. Please make sure they are dated AFTER Memorial Day (May 27) to be valid for the 2019-20 school year. These forms are the same forms needed through 12th grade, so if you have a rising 6th grader with medical issues, you can use these for middle school as well. You may bring completed forms and medicine to me at Open House.

Brookwood Karate Atlanta Focuses on the Future

The Brookwood Karate Atlanta location has been open since 2006 and is accredited by the American Taekwondo Association which celebrates 50 years this year. All of their instructors teach Songahm Taekwondo and specialize in teaching self-defense to all ages as well as the study of life skills like self-esteem, honesty, respect, discipline, communication and belief.

They also have programs which focus on fitness training. The curriculum helps support and encourage students' academic performances at school. Students must bring in good grades on homework as well as tests and report cards. They also need great reports from their parents about their home behaviors to test for their next belt.

Brookwood Karate Atlanta offers discounts to their business sponsorship school students, parents and staff. "As a former P.E. coach, I have seen how schools need assistance with funds to buy equipment or supplies for students," said Chad Hill, manager and chief instructor. "We at Karate Atlanta believe teachers are over looked regarding the influence they have with children and we want to help them as much as possible"

Many Big Creek students can be found at Brookwood Karate Atlanta thanks to many referrals from its partnership. They hope to be a friend of our school for many more years to come and help raise funds each year to benefit Big Creek in many ways.
