April 2021
Ready, Set, SPRING!
April is full of opportunities to have creative early learning experiences together!
Mini Book and Film Critic: In honor of National Reading Month held in March, visit your local library and select a book that has been made into a movie. Read the book and then watch the movie together. Give the children notepads to critique the book and movie. Ask them about the characters-- are they the same or different?
Spring Cleaning: Ask each family member to select five old books. Plan a day during the weekend to donate the books to a local hospital, homeless shelter, or thrift shop.
Gardening Fun: Spring (March-April) is the ideal time to plant vegetable and flower seeds in indoor pots. Introduce young children to seeds with the book The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Vegetables such as cauliflower, tomatoes, and broccoli can be planted in small, biodegradable pots indoors. When the weather warms up, help the children transfer the pots outdoors.
Family Seed Collage: Introduce spring to children by using seed packets. Compare the different types of seeds using small magnifying glasses. Then create a large family seed collage or craft smaller individual ones.

Everyday Active Learning
Active learning is learning that engages a child in the learning process (e.g., exploring personal interests, problem solving, asking and answering questions). This month’s active learning tip is to take a trip to the library. In addition to adding new and interesting books to your child’s bookshelf, libraries themselves are great literacy-building tools.
- Talk about the different genres of books that can be found at the library (e.g., fiction, nonfiction, science fiction, biographies). Encourage your child to choose a book from a genre he/she has never tried before.
- Ask a librarian to show your child how to search for books on the library’s computer.
Conversation Prompts
Here are some questions to ask your child this month:
What are you learning about in science?
- Are you working on any big projects now?
- What’s something that you think you are good at?
- If you could do anything you wanted for a day, what would you do?
Tip of the Month
Whether your child is a beginner reader or reading independently, your support and encouragement are key to helping your child become a better reader. Here are some questions you can ask your child about the books he/she is reading.
Questions to ask when reading together:
- What do you think will happen next?
- What would you do?
- How would you feel?
- Why do you think that character did that?
Questions to ask independent readers:
- What was that book about?
- Did you like it? Why or why not?
- Who was your favorite character? Why?
- What was your favorite part? Why?
- Would you recommend this book to a friend?
