Winter 2021 In-Person MAP Testing for Gifted Placement ONLY

Virtual learners will be taking the Reading and Math MAP assessments in the virtual classroom setting on Monday, January 25th (Reading) and Tuesday, January 26th (Math). If you would like the testing scores to be considered for gifted testing, your child will need to take the assessments in person on January 29th from 11:45 am -2:45 pm (Teacher In-Service Day).

While any student can test for the gifted qualification for the 2021-2022 school year, it is recommended for students who are NOT currently in accelerated math or advanced language and are relatively close to the qualifying standards.

Students do NOT need to take this test in-person to remain in gifted programming.

Please sign your child up using this form by Thursday, January 21st at 11:55pm.

Transition to the Junior High

We will keep this section in the newsletter for the next few months. The purpose is to communicate information with 6th grade families about the transition to Sycamore Junior High. If you have specific questions you can reach out to Assistant Principal Clayton Lavercombe (lavercombec@sycamoreschools.org) or Counselor Ben Brenner (brennerb@sycamoreschools.org).

On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, members of the junior high leadership team attended the Greene School PTO Meeting. They presented preliminary information about the transition. You can CLICK HERE to view the presentation.

2nd Semester Music

This year we will be offering a full year of music to students in the Virtual Classroom. Below is an outline of what you can expect.

Purpose: To provide virtual students with an opportunity to have structured music offerings that extend learning and deepen connections with teachers.

Content: The focus of the virtual music sections in the second semester should be one of enrichment or extension of the students’ present grade music curriculum. These sections are not intended to be a preview of the next grade’s curriculum.

Format: Presentation of material and instruction should be asynchronous, using nearpod, flipgrid, youtube, quaver, or other resources that you are comfortable using. New learning resources should be provided to students a minimum of once per week, but as often as you would like and is appropriate for your students. Teachers should engage with students synchronously a minimum of once per week with the teacher choosing the format of engagement, such as open office hours, a synchronous lesson, online game play, or other means.

Feedback: Teachers should provide students with feedback on their work. This could take the form of flipgrid response, google meet interaction, or other means. Students should receive some sort of feedback a minimum of once per week.

PEBT

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently authorized the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) through the 2020-2021 school year. To qualify for P-EBT during the 2020-2021 school year, children must be approved for free or reduced-price meals either in the 2019-2020 or the 2020-2021 school years.

If families qualify for free or reduced price meals LAST school year and you have not filled out a form yet for the 2020-21 school year, it is important that you fill out a form again this school year if you feel you will qualify.

If families did not qualify for free and reduced priced meals last school year but believe they might this school year due to financial changes during this unprecedented time please fill out a free and reduced price meal application online here. Any families who qualify this school year will not only receive P-EBT for each student they have in the district, but also receive free or reduced priced meals for the first 30 days of next school year.

We understand that everyone is receiving free meals this school year, but filling out this form is necessary for ANY other benefit that it provides - this includes but is not limited to the P-EBT through ODJFS, fee waivers, extracurricular waivers, building assistance programs, etc.

More information on filling out a free and reduced price meal application can be found here.

Contact the Child Nutrition Department with any further questions. (513) 686-1796.

PTO - New Year Volunteer Opportunities

If you are are interested in getting more involved in the Greene School and PTO this year, there are a few opportunities:

Most of our traditional PTO programs have had to be canceled this school year, but there are a few open Chair positions:

Wellness Week - Looking for one ore more parents who would be interested in planning and executing a plan for Wellness Week activities for Greene School students and staff.

Community Outreach - Planning and organizing drives or activities to benefit the less fortunate in our community, most recently providing a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon for teachers at Winton Woods Academy

Arts Alive - Are you passionate about the arts? Traditionally every other year the PTO sponsors a weeklong celebration of the arts by bringing in a plethora of various artists and performers during lunch. This year we are unable to conduct the program as we have in the past, but there is an opportunity to plan and execute something virtually.

Contact Betsy Rinehart or Kathy Mercurio at grptovpprog@sycamoreschools.org for more information.
