BASH Winter Keystone Testing Continues on Dec. 7, 8, 12, & 13
Select students are required to take Keystone exams on these days. Students and families were contacted directly via email and IC Portal by November 18.
On December 7, and 8 (Algebra I and Biology Exams) we will operate classes on a 2-Hour Delay Schedule. Students who are scheduled to take a Keystone exam are to show up to school at the normally scheduled time (7:40AM). Any student who requires district transportation or parent drop-off at the normal start time may arrive on time and will report to the cafeteria until testing is over and classes begin.
All other non-testing students should report to school at 9:30AM and will remain outside the Main, East, and Athletic Entrances until testing concludes (approximately 9:35AM).
AM BCTC students scheduled for a Keystone exam should report to school on time and will remain at BASH to test. Non-testing AM BCTC students will report as normal to BCTC.
On December 12 and 13 we will run our schedule and classes at the normal times. Students required to take the ELA Keystone exam during periods 1, 2, and Flex will re-join their 3rd period classes. Again, AM BCTC required to test will stay at BASH.
The Eagles & Tastykakes - New BES Tradition leads to Real-life ELA Application which leads to Results!
Written by Ms. Leffel - 3rd Grade Teacher at BES
Several weeks ago, when the Eagles had a win over the Dallas Cowboys, I purchased Tastykake Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars for my students to celebrate the win. So, the next win resulted in the purchase of more Tastykake Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. The tradition continued with each Eagles’ win. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving, my class had a box that contained an empty sealed wrapper.
I took this as a teachable moment and had each of my students write letters to the Tastykake Company. Yesterday, December 5th, I received an email from Mr. Paul Ridder, President of Tastykake. He wanted to personally come to our classroom to bring cookie bars to the class to help us with our Eagles’ celebrations and to make the mistake up to us. He spent a great deal of time talking with my students about hard work, learning from our mistakes, and how we never stop learning in life. Not only did he bring our class two cases of chocolate chip cookie bars, but he also gave every child coupons for a free family pack of Tastykakes!
President of Tastykake Company, Mr. Ridder responds to Ms. Leffel and her Students:
I wanted to reach out and let you know that I received your heartfelt letter as well as those from your students. I have been with Tastykake for the past 15 years in a number of different roles, including most recently as President of the Company, and as a result I take the quality of our products and our customers’ experiences very seriously. I am also a huge Eagles fan, and appreciate the importance of celebrating a win, especially one over the Dallas Cowboys, where your tradition began.
I am sorry that we let you and your students down by having an empty wrapper in one of our boxes of chocolate chip cookie bars. I have already talked to my team at the bakery and used your students’ wonderful letters as an example of why it is important to get it right each and every time we make any of our products. I hope that you will share with your students that learning doesn’t stop when you graduate from school, but that it is a lifelong pursuit and we will learn from this mistake.
To make it up to you and your students, as well as to thank you for being such big fans of Tastykake, I would like to personally stop by the Boyertown Elementary School this week and drop off a case of our Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars to help with your celebrations. I do hope, however, that the Eagles have so many more wins that you quickly run out!

Happy Computer Science Week! - December 5th - 11th
Mrs. Lutz's BES 5th graders and Mr. Koback's and Mrs. Capetola's GES 5th graders used color codes to program the Ozobot to learn about text structures.
Mrs. Christman's BES kindergarten students coded BeeBot to match letters with their sounds.
Mrs. Lamont's and Mr. Bauer's EES 5th graders coded a random number generator using the Ozobot to practice writing decimal numbers in three different ways.
MSE 6th grade students coded and flew drones in science class. Students used block based coding to fly the drones. They did a challenge yesterday and today and practiced their problem solving abilities and innovated ways to code the drone to meet the challenge.

Spring 2023 Angels for Ally Fundraiser to Benefit Briana Speese and Her Family
Yesterday, Jessica MacArthur, Briana Speese's mom shared the following update regarding the vaccine trial: Briana is doing great! She will get her 3rd vaccine on Wednesday and then have a five-week break. We are so glad she gets to take a breather during the holidays and her birthday before the next vaccine and work up of scans. She has tolerated the injections fairly well so far, but they are extremely painful. Hoping they are doing their job and going to keep our girl cancer free!
Since introducing all of you to Briana, our kindergarten warrior battling childhood cancer, we have received numerous requests to help the family. We are excited to share this news!
From the Angels for Ally Facebook Page:
After a few years without an in person fundraising event, Angels for Ally will once again host our spring fundraiser in 2023.
All proceeds from this event will benefit Briana Speese and family. Briana is a kindergarten student in Boyertown School District who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and has had to undergo extensive medical treatment. Our hope is to raise funds to help offset the out of pocket expenses that Briana’s family faces due to caring for a child with complex medical needs.
We look forward to seeing all of our Angels for Ally supporters at this upcoming event! Ticket sales and other announcements will begin in January 2023, but for now save the date for Ally’s Event, Saturday, April 15th, 2023, and help us make this a successful event!
Angels for Ally is a group that raises funds for children in memory of Ally Heintz. The group financially helps families with complex medical care and promotes the awareness of organ donation. To learn more about the group, please visit their Facebook Page.

REQUIRED: Annual Student Information Verification
BASD re-opened our Annual Student Information Verification process (ASIV) on Wednesday, November 23rd. If you have NOT completed your student's Annual Verification, the deadline is the end of the day tomorrow, Wednesday, December 7, 2022. The verification only needs to be completed once in a school year.
Why is this so important?
- We rely on our student data in emergency situations. The information MUST be up-to-date in the event of a school-wide or district-wide emergency involving a lockdown or evacuation.
- This impacts our school nurses and delivery of care. Without instructions for our health suites, vital steps could be overlooked in the treatment of a child.
- Quigley Bus Services has begun contacting parents with information related to busing and relies on our student data to deliver those messages.
- In order to avoid having your child’s photograph shared via social media and other media outlets, you must complete this process. This is crucial for families with domestic situations and more.
- This information is used to notify our families regarding emergency weather delays, dismissals, and closures.
- You could miss crucial deadlines for testing, report cards, activity sign-ups, registrations, graduation information, scheduling information and so much more.
We know it seems bothersome and takes several moments of your time, but as demonstrated last week, this information does have an impact. Help us, help you. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Emergency Delays, Closings, and Dismissals
Heavy snowfall, other serious weather conditions, or other emergencies may make it necessary to delay openings, close schools, or dismiss early. In such cases, Boyertown Area School District will utilize our Infinite Campus Messenger service to notify our staff, our families, and our communities via text, email, and telephone.
Because the distribution of messages through IC Messenger can take some time due to the volume of messages being sent, we will post a pop-up message to all district homepages and update the district's Facebook page, Twitter, and Instagram. Please note that the pop-up messages and social media posts may appear before receipt of IC Messages. Finally, we will use KYW and WFMZ.
We ask that you please review any closing messages thoroughly for information regarding Flexible Instructional Days, 6 Day Cycle information, and other pertinent details.

Flexible Instructional Days for 2022-2023
BASD has three built-in snow days for the 2022-2023 school year available before moving to a Flexible Instructional Day. Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs) allow us to minimize the impact of emergency closures on student learning and the need for make-up days at the end of the school year. Kids can get their schoolwork done AND still get out there and play in the snow! Families can better plan for summer vacations! And more!
