ACCESS Testing is Coming!
ACCESS is an English language proficiency test that measures students' academic English language skills. This English language proficiency test is taken every year by students identified as English language learners. This testing helps teachers understand whether students have the language skills they need to fully participate in the classroom. Test scores also help ELD (English Language Development) teachers track each student's progress in learning academic English and helps determine what support services to provide to each student.
ACCESS for ELLs is a computer-based test. Students do not need to study for ACCESS. The test is an opportunity for students to demonstrate all the ways that they understand and can communicate in English. It is important that students do their best to use all of the skills they learn in the ELD classroom on each part of the test. There are four areas that are tested - Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. The best way to prepare your child for the test is to make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats breakfast the day of the test. The test will be administered at Lotus starting on January 11, 2021. You will be notified which days your child will need to be at Lotus to take the test.
As a school we are taking every precaution to keep your child safe and healthy during the test. All students will be required to have symptoms and temperatures checked, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer before entering the school. Staff members will follow the same strict protocols. Testing groups are limited to eight students to allow for adequate social distancing. Only one elementary and one secondary grade level will be in the building on any day to minimize contact with others. Plexiglass barriers will also be used to separate students while testing. The Lotus staff, as well as district personnel, have developed a detailed plan to keep everyone safe and the building clean during this process.
What each student needs to bring:
- Charged Chromebook
- Personal headphones (optional)
- Water bottle with water (Students will not be allowed to fill it at school)
- A mask that covers nose and mouth
- A jacket
- A Book to Read

LOTUS School for Excellence
Lotus first opened its doors in August 2006 with a total of 147 students in grades 6 and 7. Each year after that, its enrollment increased gradually to finally reach over 900 students, with grades spanning from Kindergarten to 12th. In such a diverse and disadvantaged community, for over a decade, Lotus has managed to instill interest in students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Today it is one of the most successful schools in Aurora.
