Update from Principal Shaughnessy

I can't believe it is May already! We are already busy planning for next year.

At this point, many of you have heard about the district’s need to make some budgetary adjustments within our schools. Right now, the district is attempting to cut roughly 7.7 million dollars from the district budget. There are many reasons for the deficit, including a projected decline in enrollment district wide. This is requiring conversations about reduction in force for certificated and classified staff. There is a lot of work happening right now in the area of staffing and numbers. I continue to work to keep as many of the same adults in our building as I possibly can, for the sake of healthy continuity for our students. As soon as I have more solidified information, I will be sharing it all with the community. Thank you for your continued and ongoing support of the students and staff members at LP Brown.

May 26th is a full school day!

Friday, May 26th was originally marked on our OSD calendar as a possible day off or a snow makeup day. As it turns out, we did have a snow day earlier this year, so we will have school on Friday, May 26th so that we don’t have to add a day to our school calendar in June.

Spring Assessment Season Begins Soon

The Smarter Balanced Assessment is a state assessment required for all students in grades 3-5. This assessment measures end of year skills in English Language Arts (ELA), math, and science (5th grade only). Here are the dates for our assessment this year:

ELA Assessments (Grades 3-5): May 9th and 11th

Math Assessments (Grades 3-4): May 23rd and 25th

Math Assessments (5th Grade only): May 8th and 10th

Science Assessment (5th Grade only): May 31st

The Measure of Academic Progress is a district assessment required for all students K-5. This assessment is intended to measure growth over time and is administered three times per year. The Spring Map Assessment window is below for both reading and math:

Reading Assessment (Grades K-4): May 16th

Reading Assessment (5th Grade only): May 23rd

Math Assessment (Grades K-4): May 18th

Math Assessment (5th Grade only): May 25th

Please put these dates on your calendar. On testing days, kids should not be pulled for appointments. Please also make sure that kids get plenty of sleep on the night prior to the assessments. This will help them perform their best. Thank you for your help with all of this. We will share results with you as soon as we have them.

Spring Music Performance

Our 1st/2nd grade music performance is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24th @ 6:30pm. We look forward to seeing our students and their families!

Teacher Appreciation Week May 8-12

OSD has declared May 8-12 as Teacher Appreciation Week, and LP Brown has the best of the best! Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher during this week to send an encouraging message. Our teachers work tirelessly to build relationships and belonging for all students. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for such an incredible staff of teachers. Thank you!

STEAM Night is Coming!

STEAM Night stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

This is our second community night of the year. It will be held on June 1st at 6:00 PM.

Once again, dinner is served on this night, thanks to OSD Food Services.

The Hands on Children's Museum will be on site with a huge variety of other community organizations (Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, OSD Robotics Team, Olympia Flight Museum, Bricks for Kids) and many, many more.

This is going to be a really exciting night of hands on activities all around the school for kids to interact with. I can't wait to see everyone there.

CISPUS (5th Grade Outdoor Camp)

Our 5th grade team has been busy preparing for CISPUS! We are so excited to take our 5th grade students to this outdoor learning adventure. 5th grade parents, please make sure you have turned in all paperwork to your child’s teacher, including payment (or fee waiver), medication paperwork (if needed), and permission slips. Our 5th grade students will leave for camp CISPUS on Wednesday, May 17th and return Friday, May 19th.
