Energy Poverty
Energy poverty is the lack of electricity. Scholastic has created a global awareness project with materials to help you launch discussions. These include teacher guides and student handouts. As we prepare to turn on air conditioners, 8 out of 10 people in sub-Saharan Africa have no access to electricity. Puts things in perspective. http://www.scholastic.com/LifeEmpowered/?eml=SMP/e/20150318////ONE//house//view_now////&ym_MID=1568782&ym_rid=26712544
The importance of STEM is reflected in the following databases from February's School Library Journal:
Scholastic ScienceFlix
Alluring in design and simple in text, this resource tackles earth science, physical science, the human body, and more. Related websites and relevant experiments offer plenty of opportunity to experience these topics in action. http://www.scholastic.com/scienceflix/
Sparticl
Sparticl offers preselected subjects divided by general topics (Living Things, Matter & Energy, Tech & Invention, etc.) as well as a search engine. Interactive elements such as games, videos, and quizzes are found throughout. http://www.sparticl.org/
Rosendigital Core Concepts
The Core Concepts are Chemistry and Biology. Simple language and use of images throughout break down topics and will inspire confidence in students. Strong further reading lists make good foundations for future research, along with plenty of interactive elements too. http://rosendigital.com/
The library will be closed Monday, April 6th. I will be out for professional development.
Historical Fiction Dear America Books...
I have several Dear America duplicates that I am weeding out of the collection. These books are based on real events in American history with fictional characters. If you would like to have them for your classroom, please stop by the library.
