At JCMS, we know that helping our students achieve success is a group effort. We appreciate all the family support that helps us help our students. In an effort to create a bridge between home and school, Team 9 will be using Smore to create newsletters to keep you informed of team happenings, school events, policies, and news of interest.

Team 9 Core Classes

Language Arts

In Language Arts, we have just wrapped up our first short story of the year titled "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl. Students loved the unexpected plot twist and we had lots of great class discussions about it! I had each student write a paragraph to conclude this story that addressed the following prompt: "According to the short story 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl, how or why is truth manipulated?" Students had awesome responses and I look forward to sharing my feedback on their piece of writing this week.

The next short story we will be studying is titled "The Necklace" by French author Guy de Maupassant. This story also has quite the plot twist and fits in perfectly with our Unit 1 Essential Question: how and why is truth manipulated? I have lots of fun lessons planned for this story as well!

Hello, Team 9 Families!

Welcome to week 5! Last week we worked on combining like terms then the distributive property. We will have a quiz this week over Combining Like Terms, Solving 1 and 2 Step Equations, and the Distributive Property. After that, students will be applying those skills to multi step equations. A post test on review materials will be coming either Friday or next Monday. Your student should be bringing home their INB to study their notes, or going to Schoology for help links.

US History

Friday 9/13

We have started Unit 2! We are studying the US Constitution and Government.

We have reviewed the Articles of Confederation, our nation's first attempt at a constitution. The Articles of Confederation gave too much power to the states and not enough We talked about the big ideas of the Constitution and are ready to go in to more detail on our system of government. Next week we will be looking in depth at the Founders and the many compromises (good and bad!) that it took to build our system of government.

We worked to answer the following essential questions this week:

  • What does the record look like up close?
  • Are other objects that produce music also moving back and forth when they make sounds?

This week we brought in tuning forks, a guitar, and drums to compare our record player to different music makers. We had fun playing the instruments and watching different movements in slow motion.

Also, during WINN the students have been working on building a bridge with spaghetti and hot glue. We had a fun time testing them on Friday! Congrats to our winners!

Foundational Math - Mr. Goehl

Hello everybody!

This first few weeks we worked on going over classroom rules and expectations and started on our first unit, Place Value of Multi-Digit Whole Numbers.

For week 4 we will be studying and nearing in on our first quiz over place value.
