Preschool News
Dear Families and Friends,
This week we will be finishing our unit "Space and Our Solar System". During the week children will continue to explore the Sun, Moon, and the planets in our solar system. We will be talking about the features of the planets: size, distance from the sun, and what they are made of. We will be looking at photos taken by the Hubble space telescope and talking about some of the important jobs performed by astronauts. We will also be learning the song "I Know the Planets, How About You".

Have a great week!
I Know the Planets, How About You? (tune: Skip to My Lou)
I know the planets, how about you?
I know the planets, how about you?
I know the planets, how about you?
Let's say the names together!
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Jupiter, Saturn among the stars.
Uranus and last is Neptune too.
They all spin around in space, it's true!

3rd Grade News
Dear Families of Room 6b,
Math: When we returned to school this week we began some work on geometry. We are applying what we learned about multiplication in relation to area and perimeter. Area is the space inside a 2D shape, and perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.
Language Arts: This week we began a new level in Fundations – Level 3. The focus this week has been a bit of review as we start to learn some new concepts. We went over the –ck and –tch sounds, which always come immediately after a short vowel (ex: duck, pack, watch, fetch). We also won’t see either of these sounds at the beginning of a word. Ask your 3rd grader for examples for these sounds in words.
Social Studies: Next week we will kick off a unit on the 13 Colonies. One of the central parts of the Colonies was farming – virtually any family not living in a city had some sort of farm to grow food and possibly have animals. An in school project will involve students designing their own colonial farms. Students will make a rough draft before working on a larger final draft of their farm. The last step will be a paragraph or two to describe their farm.
Writing: We are doing a great job on our current unit on essays. We have this week and next to wrap up this unit. I’m pretty impressed with the range of topics and convincing arguments students have used in their persuasive writing!
Olympic Project: The winter Olympics begin next month, and every four years I have students
work on a home project related to the Olympics. Students will select an athlete who is competing and make a poster on their athlete. Students will track their athlete and report on how they do. This Olympics is especially cool for my family because my wife’s cousin, Jake Brown, will be representing the USA in biathlon. Cousin Jake, as he is known in our family, qualified a few weeks ago, and he was the top ranked USA biathlete in 2021. I will send home information on this project later this month.
A reminder that Monday, January 17th is Martin Luther King Day, and there is no school.
I hope that you have a nice weekend!
Sincerely,
Nate Thomas
