CMS Parent Update

Chardon Middle School
CMS Families
Despite a cold day, the snow did not prevent us from having our first JA in a Day event this year for 6th graders. A HUGE THANK YOU to Courtney Erminio, Sara Vavrik, and The Middlefield Banking Company. Courtney took lead and organized every volunteer from Middlefield Banking for BOTH days. Sara is a manager of learning experiences for Junior Achievement and helped coordinate the new class structure this year and has been meeting with us since the summer to plan an experience for all four-grade levels. Our volunteers brought the energy and spent the entire day at CMS teaching 6 lessons!
Students are not allowed to be on their cell phones throughout the school day. If your child wants to contact their parent/guardian, they can use the office phone or their cell phone IN THE MAIN OFFICE. Several students have been accessing their cell phones in the bathroom for various reasons (social media, pictures, responding to text messages). If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact Mr. Tomco or Ms. Paroubek.
It is important for CMS to reflect on current building practices. Please take a moment to fill out the brief survey linked below.

Sources of Strength
The Chardon Local School District Board of Education recently approved the piloting of Sources of Strength, an evidence-based curriculum designed to help students build on their strengths and recognize the positive forces in their lives that help them manage difficulties, build resilience, and build meaningful connections. Please find a letter to parents/guardians with more information below.
At CMS the program will be piloted in only 5th and 6th grades between now and the end of the school year, with the plan to expand next year after reviewing the impact. So far, students have played games with their advisory groups, discussed their strengths, and learned so much about their classmates in the initial practice lessons they participated in.
The website for Sources of Strength can be found HERE. Questions about the program here at CMS can be directed to Kate Collins in the counseling office or kate.collins@chardonschools.org.
