Fall 2020 - October
UPDATES FROM SD DOE
Virtual Monitoring
To limit outside visits to programs and schools, this year we will be conducting our monitoring virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will be in contact with each program in the near future to set up a time for this either via zoom or phone call.
New Co-Director
Jane grew up in South Dakota on a farm and was actively engaged in 4-H. In 2007, she completed her teacher preparation program with Northern State University. She started her career in education first as a SDSU Extension Educator for the 4-H Youth Development, followed by teaching FACS in middle school for five years. Since May 2014, she has been working for the SD Department of Education, most recently with the Office of Certification.

STEM Adventures Through EiE
“It is great to see the kids so engaged, persistent and excited the entire time!” is a common comment from the site directors at Custer, Edgemont and Hermosa. The Rapid City YMCA Southern Hills grantees launched the first 21st Century Learning Center STEM training October 18th led by Dr. Marie Steckelberg and Mari Biehl. Seven educators came together to prepare for their first Engineering is Elementary: Engineering Adventure (EA)--Liftoff: Engineering Rockets and Rovers. Focusing on the engineering design process (EDP), the educators experienced all six adventures of the unit both as an educator and as a student.

BE IN THE KNOW
21CCLC -- Google Forms for Contact E-mail and Listserv
As you know, sometimes out-of-school time programs have steady turnover. As such, the lines of communication may be blurred due to onboarding of new staff or division of duties. To assist in troubleshooting this task, the 21CCLC team has created a form for e-mail updates. As Continuation Applications are only completed once a year, this is a chance to register your frontline staff to receive direct communications from the Department of Education, Nita M. Lowey 21CCLC, and other Title IV B relevant materials. The topics will range from due date reminders on grants to applicable lessons and activities. Please fill out this form if interested.
