From Mr. R's Desk
Bobcat Nation,
Recently, I mentioned that we have to be INTENTIONAL and ACCOUNTABLE in the classroom. This week, I breakdown two topics: ARE YOU ALIGNED? HOW ARE YOU MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS?
ARE YOU ALIGNED?
Are you teaching what needs to taught? Better yet, are your students learning what needs to be learned?
Of course, every public school teacher in the state of Texas needs to be teaching the TEKS. Ensuring mastery of all the TEKS in a given subject is a task; hence the reason for every teacher to be intentional with how much time will be dedicated to each of the TEKS. Once a teacher breaks down the TEKS into an academic year, no sooner will they find out that they will be pressed for time. This is why it is very important for a teacher to have a clear and concise YAG. In creating the YAG, a teacher must consider: the TEKS, the STAAR Blueprint, previous STAAR release tests, and previous student STAAR data... all to ensure a purposeful academic year. Additionally, a teacher will need to use current student data to make the necessary adjustments as the year progresses.
HOW ARE YOU MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS?
Are your students at the state expectations of 90% Approaches, 60% Meets, and at 30% Masters? Are 100% of your students passing your class each and every six weeks? Are your AP students passing the AP exams? As a teacher, how are you ensuring that you and your students are on target?
I believe that every teacher needs to purposefully monitor every single student from the very first day. Every teacher should have a pre-assessment test and a comprehensive assessment at the end of each grading period. Yes, along the way there should be mini-marks but those should be at teacher discretion. Keep in mind that these campus/district assessments are only of value if the teacher is able to communicate and give the necessary feedback to the student. Doing a CBA or benchmark out of compliance is meaningless and pointless. CBAs and benchmarks should give you a story to act on and it is your job to do something about it. In my YAG, I always dedicated time to ensure that my students were given the necessary feedback for success. Please do not rely on a report card to monitor the progress of students. A successful teacher will go beyond that.
Stayed tuned of next week's topics...
