Mrs.Kelly's Class Newsletter
A weekly update on what's going on in OUR classroom!
Welcome!
I want to thank you for stopping by to get an idea of what is going on this week! I am so excited to have your children in my class! I already know that this school year is going to be amazing! Please feel free to take a look around the website. I will update this website weekly to ensure that you are up to date on everything that is going on in the classroom. If you have not already signed up for Remind 101, find the section on the page and do so. This app will allow you to get instant information to your phone or email as I post it. Thank you again. Enjoy!
What's been going on?
In Reading, we will talk about dramas and the elements that go into plays. We will have a book fair preview on Friday. The book fair will officially start next week!
In Writing, we will begin drafting people essays.
Spelling: This week, students will have a spelling quiz. Please encourage your child to study at home. Their words can be found on this website if you scroll down as well as in the spelling section of their agenda.
Reading Logs: Students will be required to read at least 120 minutes this week and turn in their reading logs on Friday. Recently, I have had a lot of difficulty getting students to turn in their reading logs. Please encourage your child to complete an turn them in. Forgetting homework or not turning it in for 3 times in any 9 weeks will result in an N for completes homework in Reading.
DONT FORGET-- until now, I have not required students to have their reading logs signed. I have decided that some students are taking advantage of the system and have been falsifying information on their logs (some students attempted to claim reading 4 hours straight on one school night). In order to encourage honesty, I am now requiring that students get their parents to initial anywhere on the reading log where they sat down for 60 minutes or more and read.
Thanks for looking!
Red Folders!
Writer's Notebooks
Your child's Writer's Notebook is the composition notebook that has a collage cover. Please read the quote provided to get a better idea of the importance of the notebooks. Remember, the more our children write, the better writers they will become.
I also encourage students to bring artifacts from any experience they may have that could be a seed (inspiration) for a writing piece. Some of the examples I gave students were ticket stubs from family outings, movie tickets, leaves, receipts (if something interesting happened while at the store). The possibilities are endless. With these artifacts, I would like students to write a note to themselves to help them remember the experience. Students are encouraged to write about the experience right away if time permits.
Thank you so much for supporting your children on their journey to writing growth! The students are to view their notebooks as their best friends. Please contact me with any questions you may have.
Reading Journals
Reading Logs
If your child reads more than 120 minutes per week, they will earn a punch on their Reader's punch cards. After students receive 5 punches on their card, they will receive a free dress pass and an opportunity to win lunch on the stage!
Thank you for your support in helping your child to build reading stamina!
Superhero Bucks
Please encourage students to earn as many bucks as they can! Thank you so much for your support in this!
Homework
Completing homework is a vital part of educational success. Your child will have math, science, and reading homework nightly. Thank you for your support in this.
agenda
The agenda is the primary communication tool that we use each week. The agendas should be signed by parents over the weekend and returned signed by Monday morning.
Your child's agenda will communicate upcoming events, important information, conduct notes, and other classroom happenings.

About mrs.kelly
My husband and I have a beautiful 3-year-old daughter named Grace (yes...she was named after princess Grace Kelly!). We have grown up in Houston and went to Cy-Fair schools from elementary through high school. I even stayed in Houston for college-attending and graduating from the University of Houston (Go Coogs!). During my free time, I spend time shopping, camping, crafting and doing various activities with my family.
I look forward to getting to know all of you and watching your children grow!
