Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 23, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
As the weather is beginning to warm up, we are so proud of our in-person students in 3rd and 4th grades who helped teachers to plant and beautify our school grounds. In addition, we are equally proud of all the students and staff who participated in creating an amazing video in celebration of Earth Day. Special thanks to Mrs. Hirschhorn for putting this beautiful video together. We appreciate our Cedar Grove community who continue to honor and contribute to our Green School efforts. Please take a few minutes to enjoy the video!
Next week, we will begin the spring assessments of the Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) in reading and math for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. You may recall these assessments were given in the fall. As a reminder, you may assist your child with technology issues, but please do not assist your child with test questions. The testing window closes on June 4. Teachers will let students and parents know when their children will be testing.
Beginning in May, MCPS will begin converting from heating to air conditioning. Please click on this link from the MCPS maintenance department, Heat to A/C Building Changeover, to view details about this annual changeover. If your child is in-person at school, please note that there may be days during the changeover when neither service is available. In addition, students will be going outside regularly for recess or curriculum-based activities. Please check the forecast daily and send your child to school dressed for the weather.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

Registration to Open May 3 for 2021 Summer School Programs
MCPS is planning a range of summer programs for elementary, middle and high school students to address learning loss. The focus of these programs for elementary children will be on mathematics, literacy, and specials/electives and preparing for the next grade level. We are not able to hold summer programs in our school due to some building renovations; however, we will be partnering with Wims Elementary School so that we can still offer these programs to our families. We would like to get an idea as to your interest in having your child attend virtual or in-person summer school. If you are interested in having your child attend, please take a moment to complete this survey. Thank you to our families who have already completed the survey. As a reminder, summer school is offered at no cost, and transportation is available. There will be all-virtual and in-person options. Registration will open Monday, May 3, and elementary summer programs will begin Tuesday, July 6. More information is available here, and we will continue to communicate additional information as we receive it.
Wanted
The 4th grade will continue to spruce up the school grounds as part of Earth Month and they would still welcome plant/flower donations. If you are thinning out your flower beds this spring, please think about donating your extra plants and flowers to us. We will also happily accept new plants as well. You can drop them off at the front of the school anytime. A special thank you to the Rutz family who were very generous in donating a Meadow Farm's gift card to the school. Thanks for your support. Think green and go green!

Holds to Go at Cedar Grove ES -- News for Roomies and Zoomies!
All Cedar Grove Students, whether they are in-building learners (Roomies) or at home learners (Zoomies), can put three books on hold and have three books checked out to them. We have been distributing these holds to go either to the classrooms for our Roomies, or are holding them for pickup on Wednesdays, between 1 and 4 PM.
If you are a parent of a Zoomie, whose holds are ready for pickup, your child will receive an email through their Gmail account. On Wednesday mornings, we will send out a connect ed message as a reminder. Please encourage your child to check their Gmail account regularly for emails from Mrs. Hirschhorn. If the prepared holds are not picked up on Wednesday, you may contact Mrs. Hirschhorn for an alternative arrangement. However, we will only reserve prepared book holds for one week.
As always, feel free to contact Mrs. Hirschhorn if you have any questions.
