Mooresville MS Family Newsletter
March 2, 2018
A Message from Mrs. Robinson
Greetings Mooresville Middle School Families,
The month of March reminds us to be reflective. As we look out of our windows we can see the blossom of flowers throughout the community. The season change reminds us to take a minute to reflect and think, how can we continue to grow?
As a school we have been reflecting on our students use of social media. For the entire month of March our MMS students will share positive ways to use social media via our IMPtv news program. Our monthly digital citizenship lesson will also have a focus on social media. At home it is helpful if parents are also actively monitoring their child’s usage of social media. Be aware of your child’s accounts, usernames, and overall usage.
If you are interested in seeing a day in the life of a MMS student please sign up for our next parent tour on April 10, 2018 from 8am to 9am. You can reserve your spot by calling the front office. Our Instructional Coach and I will give you a tour of our school and you will have an opportunity to visit classrooms to see what goes on everyday at MMS from 7:30am-2:21pm!
If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to give me a call.
Sincerely,
Ayana Robinson, Principal
Mooresville Middle School

Social Studies 7
Science 7
7th grade science began the quarter with reproduction, both sexual and asexual. This is a large part of our standards and leads into our genetics unit. We learned the differences between mitosis and meiosis for cell division, and of course, dissected frogs.
Now we are starting our favorite unit- Genetics! We have a lot of fun with Punnett squares and learning which traits are dominant and recessive. We will play some fun games, breed dragons, and enjoy "creating" some interesting creatures using the knowledge we have acquired. We love this unit- and the kids do as well.
We will have lots of hands-on activities to share on Learn, Create, Share night on March 8. We hope to see you all there!
WISH LIST: Mrs. Smith needs CLEAN 2 empty 2 liter soda bottles for an activity at the end of the year. She need 250 of them, so it's a long collection process! Please donate!
Also all teachers need Kleenex!

Students in Mrs. Vickery, Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Ketchie's classes analyzed Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, writing their own "I Have a Dream" speeches and recording them. Students learned about Colin Powell and Nelson Mandela. Mrs. Morris' students analyzed a poem by Tupac Shakur, "The Rose That Drew From Concrete" and made connections between Tupac's life and characters in "Discovering Wes Moore".
Mi-Waye Team
Elective Classes
Mi Waye students at MMS have completed a module in Exploring Careers. Each student was given a module based on an interest survey. Modules included Forensic Science, Bio-Medical Engineering, and Culinary Arts. Coming up, students will be working with the Spheros robots and creating an obstacle course for them.
Elective News
World Language
Exploring Language students have finished Latin and will be moving onto French. They also completed an Olympics unit and learned interesting facts about the Olympic events, the participating countries and the city of Pyeonchang, South Korea. The students will be starting to work on their final project which will involve selecting a language and country of their choosing to learn about.
Chorus
We started the quarter learning about others in our ensemble through an Identity Day. Since then, we've been learning how to read a choral score using two different styles of music (gospel and pop). Chorus students are now working on increasing proper breath support while singing longer phrases with contrasting dynamics.
Theater Arts
After sharing about ourselves during Identity Day, theater students have been looking for details while observing others. We are using warmups and improvisations in class to focus on vocal projection. Soon we will be memorizing a monologue to present to an audience.
Visual Arts
The art room is also in need of pencils and erasers! Please donate!
Computer Science Discoveries
Six students from the 1st semester classes were featured in the student showcase at the North Carolina Technology in Education Conference in Raleigh on March 1: Joseph Attanucci, Caroline Howard, Mandy Abercrombie, Dylan Armendariz, Zainab Barrie and Clark Kremar.
