Preschool
Both preschool classes now visit the library once a week for 30 minutes. In October and November, we read books, made art, and played games around the themes of apples, fall, food, and family. When we read The Apple Pie Tree, by Zoe Hall, for example, students recognized seasonal scenes throughout the gorgeous collage-style illustrations and placed them on an interactive chart about the four seasons.
Grades K - 3
Lower grades spent the beginning of the year practicing library routines, enjoying new nonfiction and fiction titles, and getting to know some of the new books in our library by Indigenous authors, including At the Mountain's Base, by Traci Sorell. Other books shared in honor of Native American Heritage Month were My Heart Fills with Happiness by Monique Gray Smith, and Birdsong by Julie Flett.
Grades 4 - 6
Upper grade students brushed up on their library organization skills, learned how to search our online catalog, and enjoyed listening to stories from a few new anthologies, including Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids, edited by Cynthia Leitich Smith, and The Hero Next Door, edited by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich.
The 'Hour of Codeā¢ is a global initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. During library lessons in December, students in grades K-6 will have fun learning coding fundamentals, in both unplugged activities and through interactive tutorials on their Chromebooks. Ask your child about their coding adventures!
BOOK FAIR!
Many have been asking, and the answer is YES, we will be hosting a book fair this year. It will be held in March during the week of parent-teacher conferences. We are working with a new company this year, Best Book Fairs. Stay tuned for more information as the date gets closer!
