March 20, 2020 Information for our Families
VUSD SCHOOL CLOSURES
Based on consultation with the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego County Health and Human Services, Vista Unified School District closed all schools and programs starting on Monday, March 16, 2020 through the end of spring break. This decision was made to curb the potential transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Any updates on the status of school closures will continue to be communicated by the district office.
First, we hope that you are all safe and healthy and that you are taking care of yourselves and loved ones. Our Roosevelt staff are missing our Wildcats! I know that these are difficult and unprecedented times that we are facing, but in the midst of this, it has been wonderful to see the caring contributions and amazing flexibility of our community members as we figure out the best ways to support our students, families, and staff during this time.
Dr. Doyle shared the most recent Community Health Alert #6 with all families, and it is remarkable to see the work that has been done in a short time to determine ways that we can continue our systems of support through a Virtual School environment. Please read the letter if you haven't had a chance. For middle school, here is some important information about learning opportunities we have developed that are now available:
Teams of VUSD teachers have developed learning resources for the interim period prior to Spring Break. These learning practices, resources, and activities are accessible in this document: Vista Virtual School: Middle School Learning Resources from Home. Students and parents should work together to select resources that match their abilities. These resources will also be available in a paper packet for families to pick up beginning Monday, March 23, from 11:00-12:00 at the following locations:
Foothill Oak Elementary
Grapevine Elementary
Roosevelt Middle School
Rancho Buena Vista High School
Vista High School
Boys and Girls Club
In the event of school closures beyond April 6th, we are committed to providing high-quality virtual learning opportunities for all middle school students. Teachers and leaders at our Vista Unified middle schools are working to finalize details for the Vista Virtual School online platform.
Please know that the learning opportunities that have been created are recommended and/or supplemental, but not required. Students will not be accountable for submitting work this week or next week, and they will not be penalized in any way if they are not able to complete any of the work. As Dr. Doyle shared, the district is coordinating a plan to ensure that all students have access to the technology they need to access a virtual school platform. The progress report grades that teachers are submitting will only include work that was assigned prior to March 13. Progress reports should be available in AERIES in early April, and we will send information about how to access them at that time since paper reports will not be printed.
Next week staff will be collaborating virtually to prepare for our shift to an online platform. We have been learning a lot about how to collaborate and continue our important work in this virtual environment!
We will continue to communicate updates as we receive them. In the meantime, thank you again for your cooperation and support!
Sincerely,
Heather Golly

Hello RMS Families! Anyone needing School Counselor support and/or Social-Emotional resources in this difficult time is being directed to the “Counseling” page under the “Departments” dropdown on our RMS Website. We’ve created a short URL for easy sharing. bit.do/rooseveltcounseling (all lowercase). We have also created a “Student Support” slideshow for RMS families that has links to TONS of resources and links to fun stuff (CLICK HERE FOR SLIDESHOW). Lastly, our counselors have created a way for our students to request a virtual appointment with us. You can find it at bit.do/rmscheckin (all lowercase). It’s important students know they can make an appointment for themselves, or make an appointment to speak with us about another person they are concerned about!
PARENTS AND STUDENTS: Follow us on our new Instagram @rooseveltcounseling for daily updates:)
Attention all 8th grade families: Students should already have their course selection worksheet. It’s a perfect time to look at that with your students and finalize some choices. As of now our normal timeline for online registration applies. Refer to the HS Registration Timeline and our Counseling page for important dates and documents for high school registration! We just updated the linked website with a google slideshow for each school. Check it out!

We will continue with food distributions among five VUSD schools. It is essential that you verify your email address since this is the best way of communication for now. RMS keeps count of a list of families in need. But times are difficult now, and many families may benefit from this service. Also check my Facebook and Twitter account below for more news.
Please leave a message to Ms. Gabby at her extension 63013, or email me at gabrielathompson@vistausd.org for any question you may have. I am constantly checking my email and I will answer you as soon as possible.

PAWS of the Month: Responsibility
Middle school presents the ideal opportunity for our students to be more responsible and accountable for their actions. Roosevelt Middle School encourages students to think ahead and consider any potential consequences that may result from students’ behaviors. We encourage students to consider the impact they are having on others, themselves, and the environment.
