HEARING AND VISION SCREENING
In accordance with Maryland State Law students in Montgomery County Public Schools are screened for possible vision and hearing problems. Trained hearing and vision screeners will be screening students new to MCPS, students in Grade (s) Kindergarten, first and second, and students referred by teachers because of possible signs of hearing or vision problems. The screeners will be at Meadow Hall Elementary School on May 27th, 31st and June 1st.
Children who do not see clearly or are unable to hear what their teacher and classmates are saying have a harder time learning at school.
You will receive a referral form, via US mail, to take to your child’s doctor if your child fails the screening. If your child is already under care for a hearing or vision problem, or you do not wish your child to be screened at school because of conflicts with your religious beliefs, please notify the school nurse in writing.
If your child wears glasses or contacts they should wear them every day and bring them to the screening.
School based vision screenings may not detect every vision problem. To learn more about possible vision problems and symptoms or health conditions that may require additional evaluation go to Montgomery County Government’s website at this link:
https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/HHS-Program/PHS/SchoolHealth/HearingVision.html
Contact your school’s nurse, Kristina Child if you have questions about your child’s screening at 240-740-5262.

PTA NEWS
COIN DRIVE AND FUN RUN
We had a very successful Fun Run and Coin Drive during the week leading up to the run! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Coin Drive. The kids were super excited and had so much fun in the friendly competition! Grades K-2 ended up winning the week with 101 pounds in coins! Grades 3-5 really closed the gap at the end with a whopping 90 pounds in coins! And everyone was a winner in this for several reasons!
* First, this money is being used to purchase school needs, primarily in the areas of PE equipment and indoor/outdoor recess items!
* Second, because everyone participated so well at the coin drive, ALL of the teachers who were in the competition to get pie'd have agreed to do so, even if their grade did not win. In addition, we have had a couple of other staff members step up and agree to participate. Those currently in the pie line-up include: Ms. Dancer, Ms. Hellman, Mr. Hines, Mr. Wells, Mr. Taylor, and Mr. Jackson. The pie-ing will commence at a time when the whole school will be able to watch! What fun!
We had a lot of participation at the Fun Run and the weather held out to make it a "SHINE" event! Congrats to Kindergarten for having the most participation as a whole grade and congratulations to Mr. Taylor's class for having the most class participation! Also, we'd like to thank all of those who helped to make the event possible:
* Joe and Jamie Parker for bringing the sound equipment and being an awesome MC!
* The Fun Run Team: Chelsa Rubin, Adriana Ignacio, Megan Algeo, Lana Crouse, Whitney Swain
* All of the volunteers, both adult and SSL students, who helped in any and all ways needed at the event!
* Giant, Safeway, and Dawsons for their donations of healthy snacks
JOIN THE PTA BOARD!
The Fun Run was so much fun! The PTA organized and managed the event and worked with the school and community to have this event. We had almost half of some classes join in the festivities. As part of the event, we held a coin drive that brought excitement to the students, and used the funds to buy indoor recess equipment, PE equipment, field day items, and general office supplies that help teachers focus on our kids. This equipment can be difficult to get through MCPS so the PTA is filling in the gaps to continue to enrich MHES and the community.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid that we will lose opportunities such as the Fun Run if volunteers don’t fill the vacancies in the PTA Board. The current Board has been amazing and can assist next year, but some positions must step down according to the PTA rules. We need your help to keep these opportunities open for our kids and community. Please reach out if you have interest. That is all you need, and we can help with the roles and responsibilities. We understand it is a volunteer position, so bring your passion and we can help with the rest, as the PTA is a team effort.
Please consider joining our team and serving alongside us to make a big impact at our school and for our kids. Three positions will be up for election at the June 7 meeting. They include:
* Vice President - Programs: This position oversees various committees that include the Book Fair, Afterschool Activities, Staff Appreciation, and Community Events such as Movie Night and Fun Run.
* Treasurer: The treasurer creates and manages the annual budget, completes reimbursements, files annual taxes, and supports committees including the Loyalty Programs and Blue Envelope Fundraiser.
* Secretary: This position records minutes of all PTA-related meetings, maintains the PTA calendar and event notices, and oversees committees such as Directory, Website, Bulletin Board, Email Listserv, and Spanish Translation.
If interested, please email Whitney Swain at whitneyswain@gmail.com. Thank you!

Come celebrate the end of the school year at the Meadow Hall PTA Spring Picnic. It will be held Friday June 3, 6-8pm (rain date of June 10). Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket to celebrate with your friends and family. Kids After Hours will be providing free Moon Bounces and the Crazy Cones game. The Kona Ice Truck will be selling shaved ice, and the PTA will be selling raffle tickets for great prizes! Pre-order forms for Little Caesars pizzas will be coming home in folders soon. The PTA will be selling drinks on the day of the event. This year we honor Mr. Lloyd as our special guest and Kids After Hours will help us run a kickball game in honor of his love of baseball. Hope to see everyone there!

COVID-19 UPDATES
Positive cases as reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Montgomery County Health and Human Services dashboard have increased. As of Wednesday, May 18, the county had more than 364 cases per 100,000 residents, putting our community in the “moderate” risk category. The Department of Health and Human Services has strongly encouraged (not required) that you wear a mask when out in the community, physically distance when you can, wash your hands frequently and stay up-to-date with your vaccines and boosters. Doing these simple things will help keep you healthy.
Consistent with Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services recommendations, it is strongly recommended that all staff and students wear masks while indoors in schools and offices. While masking remains optional systemwide, in response to increased cases, specific classes, grade levels or schools may be required to remask for periods of time to reduce transmission. Our goal is to keep students, staff and our communities healthy and maintain in-person instruction.
Letters about positive cases that include advice about mask use are sent home as necessary. MCPS is also sending additional take-home rapid tests and masks to impacted schools. Students and staff who are not up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations or boosters may be required to quarantine per guidance from the CDC, Maryland Department of Health and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.
REMINDER: Report any positive COVID-19 case via this link.
