Message From Principal Engdall

Greetings Shaw Montessori!
A big thank you to Mr. Bonds who not only planned the Honor Concert this past Wednesday evening but spent the day with our young musicians. The students enjoyed showcasing their skills and we enjoyed the beautiful music.

During our time away next week, each classroom at Shaw will be receiving a new state of the art interactive smart board! For our elementary and middle school students that do a lot of project-based presentations, this will be an amazing and fun game changer in presentation variety and quality.
When we return the students in 3rd-8th grades will begin a month of Arizona’s statewide achievement tests, the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment and an additional test for our 5th and 8th graders the AZSci, Arizona Science Test. It is important that your student be here on the day of testing (see schedule below). In the event of illness, please do not send them, we will have some makeup days at the end. They will need headphones and their water bottle and sufficient sleep please! The school does have headphones to lend.
Spring Break!!! I hope that whatever your plans, they rejuvenate and excite. We will see you on Monday, March 20th.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdal

Garden Update

Greetings!
We concluded our last week on seed germination. We learned all the interior parts of the seed as well as some exterior parts of the seedling. The students had an opportunity to check out different cotyledons on the various seedlings. A cotyledon is the food source for the seedling until true leaves emerge and the plant begins photosynthesis. They look like leaves and are often referred to as “false leaves”. They are the first set of leaflike structures that emerge from the seedling. After the true leaves emerge, the plant will shed the cotyledons and make its own food.
When we return from spring break we will begin a pico de gallo block. The students will learn about the culinary history of pico de gallo and prepare some of their own. We will also be incubating chickens! If you are interested in purchasing some chicks, they will be available in mid-April. Send me an email or catch me on campus.
THE BOTTLE CAP COMPETITION IS OVER! Ms. Chan’s and Ms. Stephanie’s classes collected the most bottle caps. They will be awarded with an ice cream party in the spring. Thank you to all the families that donated caps. The mural group is working on the murals and should have the first one finished by May. PLEASE DON’T BRING US ANYMORE BOTTLE CAPS. We have more than enough.
Here is my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, and eggshells. You can leave them on the table outside the front office, except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bottle cap bin.
We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your spring break!
Mr. Moench
