Learning in the Kitchen
When you invite children into the kitchen to help cook or bake, they learn so many lessons along the way. Even for the youngest of children playing with the plastic storage containers, matching up the lids, or stirring empty pots and pans can be fun, while still allowing you to engage in conversation and respond to their actions. As children get older they can help wash the produce, set the table, mix and pour, and make ingredient lists for the shopping trip. Working in the kitchen not only allows you to continue building language skills, but also discuss the importance of eating a variety of foods. Incorporating counting, measuring, and noticing the changes that occur during the cooking process encourages building those math and science skills. Let’s not forget about all of the connections we can build while cooking and working together as well. Learning either a new or a well-loved family recipe can be a great bonding experience for the whole family. Ask your parent educator for additional ways to involve your children in the kitchen.
