Texans Rely on King Cotton
One of the most important crop in Texas was cotton. Most Texans in Texas were indeed cotton farmers instead of ranchers. Proceso Martinez was the man that introduced cotton to the Rio Grande valley. He was a leader in agriculture and business and he also brought corn farmers with him to south Texas
Tenant System Replaces Slavery
The new system, tenant farming, developedafter the Civil War greatly affecting lives of Texans in Texas. The plantations were replaced with small farms after the war and mostly rented to tenant farmers. The landowners got a part of the crop just like sharecropping. If the landowners provided farming, tools, seeds, and supplies they recieved a larger portion than they would originally recieved.
