Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School Newsletter
April 10-14, 2017
The district Meet of Champs was held this week and Garcia athletes performed! There were quite a few campus and district records broken in several events. Great job to our track stars!
Eighth grade field day will be held on May 30. Math teachers are selling t-shirts for $15. We would like all of our Gladiators wearing the trendy tee designed by 8th-grader, Allysen Dye, on that day. Contact your child's math teacher if you need more information. All students were given an order form this week. Beginning May 1, we will start taking donations of water and popcorn for this event as well. (See flyer included in this newsletter.)
Reminder: Friday, April 14 and 28th are holidays.
Report cards will go home on April 20th.

Good luck to our golfers this week at the district championship tournament!
It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!

GRIT-TY Teachers Wanted!

Click on the link below to nominate a teacher. Be ready to tell us why this teacher deserves this prestigious title. Every week in April we will crown a new GRIT King or Queen. Will your favorite grit-ty teacher be next?

As a way of introducing our Holocaust Literature unit, Garcia Gladiators had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Mrs. Rose Williams, a Holocaust Survivor. Mrs. Williams is one of the few survivors still living and takes the time each year to come tell her story to our 8th graders. She spoke to our Gladiators about her life story and what she and her family endured as a result. Her testimony of the events that took place leading up to and during WWII left an entire room of 8th graders speechless. Ms. Williams moved many people to tears while listening to her personal and first account story.
She is an inspiration to us all, and she left us with some advice: Show your loved ones how much you care about them; you never know what tomorrow may bring. Her most important piece of advice was this: Don’t be a bystander. Stand up against injustice. Speak up for those who can’t do it for themselves. And never give up.
When her own desire to survive was dwindling, she almost gave up; fortunately, she found the inner strength to go on and was eventually reunited with her brother and sister. If not for that, we never would have had the honor of meeting her and hearing her amazing story. Although her story occurred many years ago, it is, in essence, a story of determination, courage, and the resiliency of the human spirit, something all of us can relate to and learn from. We thank Mrs. Williams, for her encouraging words, her unyielding forgiveness, and her message of hope.
