AMCMS Principal's Office
What's Going on in the Principal's Office?!
My Challenge to You
Take a few minutes to watch the video. This will challenge and stretch your thinking. "Knowledge is not understanding." Think about that. He KNEW how to ride a bike, he had been doing so for over 25 years. He did not UNDERSTAND how to ride this bike. Why? "Once you have a rigid way of thinking in your head sometimes you cannot change that, even if you want to." It is how your brain becomes wired... but can you change?
He did after 8 months of dedicated, daily, practice for about 5 minutes a day. Consistent practice, daily, repetitious practice. Day in and day out. One day he could not ride the bike and one day he could, just like that. How about his son? This is a wonderful example of how the brain works differently in different ages of people. As the video continues you see that he struggled with his prior learning of riding a regular bike but he quickly remembers... quickly compared to how long it took him to undo that learning!
So, what applications can you make to your classroom? How about with students and their learning? How about with you and your learning?
For me this shows that we can do anything that we put our minds to, even if it takes time, work, dedication, and repetition. This is how we learn. Sometimes it just takes longer than others. Some people have to unlearn before they can learn how we need them to learn. We all have the capacity for growth. The real question is do we have the grit and stick-to-it-ness to realize that growth. How about you? What do you think?
My challenge for you this summer is to re-think and re-learn how you teach. Just like in the video you will have to think about this and work on this for a few minutes each day for your brain to make the change. What are you changing you ask? Changing the engagement level of your students. Think about and focus in on active student engagement that involves student voice, conversation, movement, and manipulation of their learning.
When you increase the physical engagement of your students from passive (note taking) to active (conversations, movement, manipulations) you will see a dramatic increase in their learning.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
