Third Grade Classroom Guidance

Being Respectful Learners and Using Self Talk to Learn

Learning Target:
1. I can apply focusing attention and listening skills effectively.
2. I can demonstrate self-talk appropriately.

Activity: This month in classroom guidance, we discussed the importance of being able to block out distractions during the school day. As learners, it is important to use three body parts when really listening-eyes, ears and brain. While I was teaching I kept walking around the class to be sure students follow me with their eyes as this is part of the learning process and being good listeners AND respectful learners.

Application: Ask your child what self talk is and how they can use it in school to help block out distractions and stay focused on the task at hand. Also, have them discuss how we used the game of Hangman in class to help them learn to self talk through distractions! It was quite noisy but fun and meaningful for the lesson!

ASCA (American School Counseling Association) Standards:
