On this day, display your culture or religion by wearing the traditional clothing of it! For example, you can wear kurtas (Indian clothing), Hanfus (Chinese clothing), and Shenbolens (African clothing).
Although we can’t have Heritage Day in person with dance performances, you CAN show your culture by wearing any traditional clothing!

Dealing with Anxiety
“When our little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it's our job to share our calm, not join their chaos” – L.R.Krost
With all the uncertainty about school and COVID affecting all aspects of our lives, anxiety may be at an all time high for you and your children. Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, fear, worried thoughts, and/or physical changes. Typically children experiencing anxiety will complain of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches. Anxiety can also make children angry and oppositional as they vie for control. It can be very hard for children to articulate his or her anxiety and often need additional support from adults to better manage these fears.
Here are a few parent tips to help deal with anxiety:
Tip #1: Positive Storytelling-Children have powerful imaginations. Using this creative thinking can help build a story in which your child is stronger than he or she feels in real life. You can encourage your child to use this imagery any time fears arise.
Tip #2: Reward Brave Behavior-When your child feels anxious about an activity, he or she may find ways to avoid the things that are feared. Sometimes it helps to encourage your child to face these situations by using rewards. Even if you child really wants to change fearful behaviors, the extra motivation provided by a reward can be helpful.
Tip #3: Evaluate Worst Case Scenarios- Change a fearful situation into a temporary problem. Anxiety can lead your child to think that things are either right or wrong, even though many things land in the middle. Predicting the worst outcome is one way to show your child how unlikely it is and to reassure him or her that anything can be managed if it occurs. This approach can help your child regain a sense of control over his or her situation.
Tip #4: Teach Self-Relaxation- Distraction works too! When feelings become overwhelming, the body can feel bad too. Your child may have a sore neck or shoulders, a stomach ache, quick and shallow breathing, or feel overly tired. Teaching your child how to be nice to his or her body during stressful or anxious times can be good practice for managing stress. Once these reactions are under control, a child can often get through the rest of the day without more trouble.
Please feel free to contact us with any concerns you may have regarding your child. Sending you all best wishes,
Jackie Cardinale and Molly Engblom, School Counselors at Park Village Elementary jcardinale@powayusd.com and mengblom@powayusd.com

Have you noticed a stand out volunteer around Park Village? Even though the classrooms have not been able to accept volunteers, that hasn't stopped the service opportunities and thoughtful work to make our school a great nest for our little penguins. It’s time to nominate our volunteers for a Park Village Honorary Service Award. We are so lucky to have talented and loving volunteers around our school, let’s recognize them for the good they do.

PV HUGS community message wall
Introducing our PV HUGS community message wall! Look in the ESS parking lot for our HUGS message wall where families can safely come and tie on a ribbon with a positive message to our PV school community. We all are in need of Hope, Unity, Gratitude, and Strength right now, and that's exactly what our PV H.U.G.S. message wall represents!
Please practice all safety precautions such as wearing masks and social distancing when coming to place a massage or read a message. Ribbons will be sent home with your child or at your next materials pick up. Students and their families can write positive words to share with their community and then tie ribbons on the fence. Thank you to our wonderful DADS group for help on the sign installation and to the PTA and No Place For Hate Student Committee for making this happen!"
Celebrate with a “Birthday Book” Donation to the Library
The school library’s Birthday Book donation program is an opportunity to celebrate your child’s birthday (or another milestone occasion) by choosing a book for the library's collection. Your gift will benefit PVES students for years to come!
After the donated book arrives at the library, a special bookplate with your child's name and birthday age will be placed inside the front cover. I will also reserve the book so your child can be the first student to check it out from the library (unless they choose not to).
This program is completely optional, but new books are greatly appreciated by the students, teachers, and me! Thank you very much! -- Mrs. Fleming, Librarian
How the Birthday Book Club works:
1) Choose a book from the Park Village ES Library Wish List on Amazon any time. There are a wide variety of preselected books to choose from. You can ship the books directly to the library.
2) Complete the Birthday Book Donation form online so I know what to expect.
3) When the book is ready for check-out, your child can be the first one to borrow it.
After the book is returned, it becomes part of the library collection for other students to enjoy.
Thank you for supporting reading and learning at Park Village!
No Place For Hate
We are excited to share with you that Park Village was officially designated as a No Place For Hate school again this year! This past week teachers kicked off this valuable program with students. As a reminder, The “No Place For Hate” program was created by the national Anti Defamation League (ADL) organization and was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. Each year we will start by having all staff and students take the No Place For Hate Pledge seen here.
I PROMISE to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
I PROMISE to do my best to be kind to everyone -even if they are not like me.
IF I SEE someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher
EVERYONE should be able to feel safe and happy in school.
I WANT OUR SCHOOL to be No Place For Hate.
I PROMISE to abide by and uphold the No Place For Hate Pledge.
We will also be implementing three school wide activities throughout the year. The goal of these activities are to continue to find ways of building a more inclusive and respectful campus and to empower students to take a stand against hate and bullying. In addition to school wide activities, we have created a “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” for parents and students to access throughout the year. We hope students and parents will explore these resources together to have discussions around the topics of diversity, tolerance, and acceptance. Click here to access the “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” If you want to learn more about the No Place for Hate program in San Diego visit. https://sandiego.adl.org/no-place-for-hate. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Your “No Place For Hate” Team Members
