New Front Door Video Intercom System at PCHS
The Platte County R-3 School District Safety and Security Master Plan calls for the installation of a front entry video intercom system in all schools. These video intercoms have recently been installed at Platte County High School. The purpose of the video intercom is to enhance school safety through controlled building access, entryway identification, and visitor monitoring. The new system requires a slightly different approach to entering our schools during school hours. The process for any visitor requesting entry during the school day will be as follows:
2. Our building front office staff will come across the intercom to welcome you and ask for the reason you are requesting school entry.
3. Please state your reason for requesting school access such as:
- "I have an appointment with the principal."
- "I need to check out my child from school."
- "I would like to visit with a school counselor about my child's schedule."
- "I am dropping off my child's lunch."
We recognize this process will take a few extra minutes when visiting our schools but hope you value the improved security it provides for our students and staff. Thank you for your support and patience as we implement this new visitor management protocol.
Signs of Suicide (SOS) - Awareness and Prevention Training
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions, which can be difficult for both students and their parents. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) does occur in some adolescents. Depression is also a leading risk for suicide, which is now the second leading cause of death among 15-34 year-olds, according to the US Center for Disease Control.
To proactively address these issues, Platte County High School is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as a part of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program. This program aims to help students recognize the symptoms of depression and warning signs of suicide in themselves or their friends and to teach them the appropriate action steps they should take to get help. Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
- To reduce stigma and help our students understand that depression is a treatable mental illness.
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend.
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
- To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help if they need it.
In November, Platte County High School students will participate in the SOS High School Program. This program includes a video, a brief classroom discussion, and completion of a confidential student screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal behavior.
If you do NOT wish for your child to participate in the SOS High School Program at Platte County High School, please complete the form attached and return it to the PCHS Counseling Office. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that your child has permission to participate in this program.
Pirate Presence
Our goal at Platte County School District is to ensure that every student attends school regularly. Our state and district's goal is to have our students attending at or above 90% or more of the total time school is in session. Our current attendance rate is 87% - 87% of our students are present 90 % of the time.
We have several staff members who are serving as Pirate Presence Attendance Accountability Partners. Our goal is to continue building positive relationships with our students. Research proves that positive relationships, high attendance rates, and student achievement are all related. We look forward to our students being here each and every day so that they can experience high levels of success in all aspects of their lives.
Parents can help students be successful by helping them stay healthy and get the rest they need to be present and to focus. When they have the tools they need to be present at school they can be more successful and confident in themselves.

Bullying and Safety Concerns
Safety is one of our district’s top priorities and to help safeguard our school community, our district is now using SafeSchools Alert, a tip reporting service that allows students, staff, and parents to submit safety concerns to our administration.
You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, or any safety issue you're concerned about through SafeSchools Alert.
Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action. And, tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer.
Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to learn!
