Reflections From the Principal
We are nearing "testing season" at Fountain Central. February marks the beginning of required assessment windows by the state. While not all students will be testing, there are different assessments for different grade levels and at different times. The required Sophomore ISTEP 10 testing dates are in the "important dates" section below and we will be sending out more information reguarding required assessments for junior high next month. It is important for students to get ample amount of sleep the night before and eat a nutritious and filling breakfast on testing days.
I would also like to point out that freshman orientation will be held on February 26th at 6 pm. All 8th grade students and their parents/guardians should plan to attend orientation that evening. An informational meeting for those students going to Washington, DC will be immediately following freshman orientation. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!
Last but not least, at the beginning of the school year we set out to maintain/increase our attendance rate to be over 95%. While we met our goal during first semester, I'm sad to report that we have not met our goal in January. Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. While we are aware that much sickness has been going around, please assist us in getting your child to school each day.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Hammond

SEL Coordinator, Mrs. Britton
My name is Kim Britton and I am the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator for SEFSC. I wanted to reach out to you, as parents and guardians, to update you on a few SEL things in the corporation. We have started LifeSkills lessons at the 3rd, 4th, and 7th grade levels. LifeSkills is a research-validated substance abuse prevention program proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors. This comprehensive and exciting program provides adolescents and young teens with the confidence and skills necessary to successfully handle challenging situations. It is designed to teach students the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressures to smoke, drink, and use drugs, help students to develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence, enable students to effectively cope with anxiety, increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance abuse, and enhance cognitive and behavioral competency to reduce and prevent a variety of health risk behaviors. Please be aware that these types of conversations are happening with your student. Feel free to talk about these things with your own student to help support these goals.
In addition, I am sharing this video with you about SEL in schools and the role that parents/guardians can play in helping to build Social Emotional Learning skills in your students. As a school, we recognize that any successful initiative or skill that your child gains needs to be reinforced at home as well. This video is to inform parents on SEL in schools and provide them with insights on SEL in their own parenting practices in order to support their children’s social and emotional know-how.
