The Blue Creek Gazette
March 2019
From the Desk of Mr. Joines
As we all know, this year will go down in the record books as a very unusual year. Hurricane Florence has had a major impact on our school, school system, and community as a whole. Fortunately, Blue Creek had minor damage and was able to return to school in Phase 1. It took a few months, but it definitely feels like we are back to a normal school year, well, as normal as this year can be. Students and staff immediately jumped back into academics and showed great resolve in moving the year forward.
I am very proud of our students, staff and community for coming together in the many ways they did. I feel confident that we will end the year with great academic gains.
Everyone at Blue Creek appreciates the assistance and partnership we receive from you, our families. Working together, we will achieve great things.
As always, I am a phone call or email away if you need assistance.
Sincerely,
Tim Joines
Principal
The Leader In Me Family Monthly Newsletter
March 2019
Readers are Leaders! Every year we join in this month-long celebration designed to encourage reading as a fun activity for the whole family. Reading, and understanding what you read, is a skill that everyone needs to be successful. The best way to improve understanding is to read a lot. There is nothing like a challenging book to lift you up or take you to another world. Developing a love of reading will be an asset to your child in all areas of school and give him/her a jumpstart to a lifetime of reading!
Below is a list of books that your child will enjoy while also reinforcing the 7 Habits at home.
Additional suggestions can be found at The Leader in Me Online.
Lower Elementary (K-3)
Read the book together. Ask your child questions about how the characters used the habits.
Upper Elementary (4-6)
Your child reads the book to you. Ask questions about how your child uses the habit.

Blue Creek Elementary School Celebrates Read Across America
Blue Creek Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day February 25 - March 1, 2019. An initiative from the National Education Association, “Read Across America” has its roots in the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which occurred on March 2, falling on a weekend this year. During this week students participated in a variety of activities to encourage literacy and to build a joy for reading.
We began our celebration on Monday, February 25th with "Fox in Socks Day" and ending with our "Story Book Character" parade and an assembly in the multi-purpose room.
Thank you to all the families, students, and staff members that participated in this wonderful event! We are already looking forward to next year!
