THE VALUE OF MORNING MEETING
February 25th, 2015
Welcome back!
We need everyone to start our day
Each morning , every Compass class gathers to start the day with a morning meeting. This time builds community, sets the tone for the day, and allows the class to preview and review content. It is an important part of the school day and we want to be sure everyone is present and able to participate.
Greeting Each Member of our Community
Each morning, we say hello to one another. Each child hears their name and feels welcome into the class. We often sing a song together or play a short game. This is a critical part of building our community.
Reading the Morning Message
Students build literacy skills by reading the message about our day. Repeated patterns allow students to access known words. We reflect on things that happened the day before and have an opportunity to talk about things coming up each day. Students interact with this message in order to use our sight words in context.
Shared Reading
During our morning meeting we share poems and big books. This shared reading experience offers first graders repeated exposure to the same text and practice reading fluently. These opportunities also allow students to celebrate all the sight words they already know and identify the new words for the week.
What Are We Doing Today?
We end our meeting by reviewing the schedule for the day. This allows students to preview the work of the day and ask questions. When we have changes to our regular routine, we use this time to discuss it with the Pine Class.
