WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update
January 2020
Reading and Writing
Reading
We are beginning the Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles unit. In this unit students will continue to use their reading super powers to tackle more challenging books. We will strengthen our letter-sound knowledge to become stronger readers and solve unknown words.
Writing
We will be writing how-to books. Throughout the unit, we will distinguish the difference between a narrative and a how-to text and practice thinking of a topic that we know a lot about in order to teach others.
Math
In this unit we start out making a number line, using the words before and after. Next we will be adding and subtracting numbers to ten. During the last module we will be comparing and contrasting length, exploring story problems and introducing pennies and nickels.
Science
In Science, we will learn about animals in the snow and continue our discussions with the change in season. We will look back to the trees we observed in the fall and notice the similarities and changes!
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will explore “Who Am I?” We will discuss the way we look, the things we care about as well as the things we do! Each of us is special and unique and it’s an awesome thing to celebrate!
LMC - Library
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Continued use of our best singing voices and beginning to study The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: Solo (1 instrument) vs. Ensemble (more than 1 instrument) and Piano (quiet) vs. Forte (loud)
Technology
Students are independently practicing logging into a computer with their unique username and password. Students are also independently practicing launching websites on the computer and apps on the iPad.
Art
How do you look at art? How do you know if art is “good”? What is imagination? (Apple Still Life, Eric Carle Collage)
PE
This month, students will learn, practice, and review how to play games and activities that use both short and long-handled implements. We will be starting with Floor Hockey and finish out the month with Net Games (volleying and racquet sports).
Guidance
We are beginning our unit on Emotion Management. Students are learning how to recognize feelings in their bodies and calm down strong feelings like frustration, anger and disappointment.
