Mr. Mauck's Musings
The Dance team is at Center Grove. The girl's basketball team dropped a heart-breaker in the sectional finals but had a great year. The academic bowl team had their first competition and Elle Smith placed first in psychology with a perfect score and Andrew Davis won a bronze medal in World Geography. If you are looking for a road trip the Boy's Basketball Team travels to Newburgh to take on Castle. Good luck to all of our teams. Congratulations to Bailey Lents and Marilyn Beier who were recognized as our Student and Staff of the Week.
We have some classroom and school activities highlighted this week. Student Council hosted a pep session for our winter activities. There were four games for students and a homecoming theme parade. Mrs. Mehinger's marketing class designed a "Be Kind" bulletin board in the cafeteria. Mrs. Schubert's class used legos to build and perform skits for the Mark Twain book they are reading. We also have the new StuCo bulletin boards done for February and they are some of the best yet.
The Guidance Department would like to remind everyone of the School Day SAT events taking place on March 1. All Juniors will be taking the SAT test. This is a state requirement. There is no fee to take the test and students will automatically be registered. Freshmen will be attending the Prime For Life Training. Sophomores will be taking the ASVAB Test (students will automatically be registered). Juniors will be taking the SAT Test. (students will automatically be registered). Seniors will either be performing Community Service, Job Shadow, or College Visits. You need to turn in a signed permission slip for the activity you will be doing on March 1. Community Service and Job Shadow permission slips are available in your Gov’t/Econ classes. College visit forms are available on the guidance website.
Seniors, please note the information for senior pictures to get them submitted or the yearbook. The Band will be hosting A Noteable Event auction. Information to submit bids is listed below. The DCBHOF Scholarship Opportunity is available and information is listed. We were also made aware of a new organization helping individuals with special needs, Southern Indiana Special Needs Network has a flyer included in the newsletter.
Finally, a few reminders to keep JHS running smoothly. If a student feels sick at school they must see the nurse and allow the nurse to contact the parents. Students are not to call or text their parents to get them from school or to leave on their own. If a student would bypass the nurse this will lead to an unexcused absence and discipline. We made a big push this week to get our new drivers to purchase a parking permit. We had many vehicles in the lot without permits. The money raised from the sale of parking permits is used solely for traffic control in the afternoons and patrolling of the school in the mornings. When this account has insufficient funds we will have to close the 15th street exit and all vehicles will have to exit campus from the North St. Charles Street exit. We do not want to close the 15th street exit so please purchase your permits so we can keep both exits open.
Have a great weekend and don't forget those Valentine's Day gifts.

Senior Portraits for Yearbook
- We will gladly use your senior’s school portrait if you feel it is acceptable.
- If you haven't scheduled photos yet, it might be too late to get photos from our local professionals, but there are several amateur photographers we can send you that would be glad to take nice senior photos for a very reasonable price or possibly free. Even some of our talented yearbook staff members might be able to help.
- Please, talk to me before trying to turn in photos from a phone or someone that just "has a nice camera".
Now for the details: (These are the same details sent to students in October)
Your senior needs to choose up to 2 photos.
Have your student talk to their photographer, they (most likely) were already sent a link to a submission website. DO NOT JUST SEND ME PHOTOS! If your child’s photographer is from out of town, and/or did not get the private submission link in their email, please let me know so I can contact them directly.
-The first will be a vertical portrait used in the yearbook and media outlets such as The Herald.
It needs to be a professional-looking photo that is appropriate for school and public viewing. NO cars, trucks, pets, or other "props" should be used in this photo.
-The second will be a horizontal photo that is used on the big screen for our graduation ceremony. This photo can show a little more "personality" and is totally optional.
Both should be free of watermarks and a large enough resolution for print, which is a big reason why your senior’s photographer will be submitting for them. Screenshots from a phone or photos saved from a photographer's website without permission ARE NOT AN OPTION.
-The absolute deadline is February 14th. But we'd LOVE to see them turned in before that! (see what we did there?) So have your senior talk to their photographer soon about their choices.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Elrod!

Lego Skits
Miss Schubert's English 11 classes had fun learning with Legos during class on Friday. Students practiced utilizing textual evidence, characterization, dialect, and comprehension by creating Lego models and skits using Mark Twain's "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
