Weekly Updates - February 5, 2023
Wow, it was an amazing week in the Swansboro community! The Swansboro High School Athletic Department hosted the inaugural class of the Hall of Fame on Saturday night. Congratulations to recipients Joan Riggs, Bob Vroom, Joseph Beasley, Ricky Mobley, Peace Shepard Easton and Ronnie Ross. Congratulations to sophomore Noelani Alvarez for winning the American Legion Oratorical District Contest at Post 78 on Saturday. She will be moving on to compete at the division level for a chance to make it to the state competition.
Our orchestra students participated in All-County Orchestra this weekend at Jacksonville High while our All-District Band students performed at East Carolina University. In athletics, our men's wrestling team competed in the team duals in Hillsborough, but fell to Orange High in the 3rd round. Our lady wrestlers competed in the state championship on Friday. In winter track, our athletes competed in the conference championship on Tuesday with the following placements:

Lisa Ferguson- 3rd place, High Jump, 2nd place 55m Hurdles
Makenna Panos- 2nd place in High Jump, 1st place in Pole Vault

Lucas Bush-2nd place Pole Vault
Dean Massaquoi-3rd place in Triple Jump
Jack Lees-3rd place in 55m Dash
Derrick Buchanan-2nd place 55m Hurdles
Girls 4x800- 3rd place-- Delaney Horton, Maddie Lemke, Marielle Hirkala, and Kaydience Scanlon
Boys 4x200m- 2nd place - Jack Lees, Jeremiah Rodriguez, Trevor Martin, Derrick Buchanan

Our swim teams competed at the regional competition on Friday with the following students qualifying for states:
Boys 200 Medley: Nate Priechenfried, Johnny Terrazas, Logan Kinlan, and Trevor Hucal
200 Individual Medley: Logan Kinlan
200 Individual Medley and 500 Yard Freestyle: Bergan Cassiano
100 Yard Butterfly and 500 Yard Freestyle: Trevor Hucal
100 Yard Breaststroke: Nate Priechenfried
Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay: Caitlyn Priechenfried, Mysl Carpenter, Bergan Cassiano, and Marielle Hirkala
Boys 400 Yard Freestyle: Nate Priechenfried, Aiden Nolan, Trevor Hucal, and Logan Kinlan
Did you catch the student athlete who has qualified for states in both track and swim? Yep, that is Marielle Hirkala, a double season athlete who has qualified for states in 2 sports. Marielle is also an honor student with exceptional grades. Way to set the bar Marielle! In basketball, our varsity men beat West Carteret on Tuesday night. This was the first time the men have defeated West Carteret since 2011. JV and varsity teams won their games against Dixon on Thursday and Friday.
We also hosted our rising 9th grade class meeting on Thursday night. Current students will receive 2023/2024 registration information on Monday during homerooms. Please review this information with your students this week as we will begin meeting with students to select courses for next year in the coming weeks.
This week at Swansboro High School is Counselor Appreciation Week and will include interim reports on Wednesday and an early release professional development day on Thursday. Please note that all students will dismiss at 11:25am and lunch will be served. In athletics, basketball will travel to Croatan on Tuesday and White Oak on Thursday. Track and swim will compete in the state championships while wrestling competes in regionals on Friday.
