Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 2 - Issue 1

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom.

It's been an incredible first week of the half term! Of course, we are now part of the STAR Multi-Academy Trust and, apart from our letterhead, we've not really noticed much difference.

While we are talking about differences, our Sports Day this year was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and our wonderful children. There were many highlights. Seeing the older children support the younger ones during their events was certainly my favourite but also recognising the achievements of individuals in their sporting prowess was also magical.

Meanwhile in school, Miss Horner and Miss Mackay took part in the North Yorkshire Writing Moderation for KS2. This is to check our judgements for accuracy against the national picture. I am delighted to say that their judgements were 100% accurate, meaning that the hard work of all staff involved this year has paid off. Here's our four year trend for writing in KS2. You will see we have managed to buck the trend here. A fantastic achievement.

Finally, our children were given a real treat on Friday afternoon when a professional musical production company came in to perform Treasure Island. Many thanks to Friends of Hungate for arranging this.

KS2 Sports Day Achievers

Congratulations to all the children who took part in our annual Hunga' Games this year. A special mention to our medalists who received their medals in assembly on Friday morning.

People Who Help Us - EYFS - It's the Police this week!

This week, our children in EYFS had a visit from a policeman! The children learned lots and thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

PE Challenge Day

Continuing our strive to develop healthy sports in our young children, we are holding a PE challenge day on 18th June 2018. The day will involve all children taking part in a range of sports.

For further information about the sort of events on the day, click here.

Incubator in School

Although it's not easter, we have an incubator in school which contains a series of eggs due to hatch in less than 2 weeks! Eggciting! This project, which is part of the life cycles science curriculum, will be accessed by all children and we are kindly asking for a £1 donation to support the hire cost. Payment will be available through Parentpay from next week. Thank you once again.

Hunga' Games Sponsored by the Spar

Our Hunga' Games was a huge success thanks to the many people who got involved to make the day so special. Thank you also to our sponsors SPAR, who provided banners, water bottles, whistles, stickers and finishing tape for the event.

Nut Allergy Information

We have a number of children in school who suffer from severe allergic reactions to nuts; so much so that even an open packet releasing airborne particles could result in quite nasty outcomes. Please support us in safeguarding these children by making sure that your children do not bring items of food into school that contain nuts. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Nursery Applications for September 2018

Just a quick note to let you know we will be allocating places for our Nursery session for September 2018 very shortly. If you would like a place, please contact the school office.

Car Park Notice

We've noticed that some parents are using the school car park for dropping off and picking up children. Please help us to keep our children safe by making sure you don't use the car park for this purpose. If you see anyone doing so, please let me know. Thank you.

School Uniform & Snack Reminder

We seem to have a small number of children who are coming to school in brightly coloured trainers. These are not part of the school uniform policy. Children should wear plain black shoes.

We like to encourage our children to have a healthy break time snack and we provide this through school. However, it seems that some children are bringing snacks into school containing sweets/chocolate. These are not permitted.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 97.2%!

Our average attendance this week is 94.6%. It seems that the bout of Chicken Pox in Early Years is taking its toll!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
